C.J. Stroud May Be Driving Up Houston's Biggest Future Bill

Speculation mounts as an anonymous executive suggests C.J. Stroud's stellar performances could soon earn him a lucrative quarterback contract with the Texans.

C.J. Stroud is turning a stalled contract situation into a much pricier problem for the Texans.

Houston had a chance to lock up its quarterback on what ESPN’s DJ Bien-Aime described as an offer in the neighborhood of $55 million annually, but the sides couldn’t get a deal done. Stroud chose to play out the year and bet on himself, and that gamble is looking smarter by the week.

Through seven games, Stroud has stacked up 1,867 passing yards, 11 touchdowns and just one interception. He’s fourth in the NFL in passing yards and second in expected points added, production that has kept Houston’s offense afloat even as the Texans sit at 2-5.

One anonymous AFC executive told Bien-Aime, “He’s making himself a lot of money. New tax bracket. If he keeps playing like this and they somehow get in the playoffs and make a run, there’s no reason why he can’t be somewhere close to the highest paid.”

That’s the kind of quote that should make Houston pause. What looked like a potential team-friendly extension has now turned into a moving target, especially with the quarterback market still climbing.

Several big names, including Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels and Drake Maye, are nearing their own extension windows, and league sources believe that could push the ceiling even higher. Some around the league think $70 million annually could become a realistic benchmark.

Stroud already has the résumé of a franchise quarterback. He has three playoff victories, a Rookie of the Year award and the kind of ability that can lift an offense when it’s rolling. If he closes strong and helps Houston make a real postseason push, the number attached to his next deal could rise again.

There’s no immediate deadline for the Texans to settle this. Stroud is under contract through 2027 after Houston picked up his fifth-year option.

But the longer this goes, the more expensive it gets. Houston knows exactly what it has, and Stroud is making sure the price keeps going up.

Texans Head Into Chargers Matchup With Two Big Absences Still Looming

The Texans' final injury report for Week 9 brought no late surprises, but it did lock in two absences that shape the way they will have to attack the Chargers. Running back David Montgomery is out again with a groin injury after missing the last two games, and safety Reed Blankenship will also sit as he continues to work back from a concussion and hand surgery.

For Houston, the timing matters because this matchup comes against a Chargers team dealing with its own injuries but getting key starters back in the lineup. Even with Los Angeles short-handed in spots, the Texans are still heading into Sunday without two players who affect both the back end and the ground game, leaving the team to patch together answers in a game that could hinge on depth as much as star power. Texans Now Face A New Chargers Wrinkle In Week 9

The Texans are preparing for a different look from the Chargers in Week 9, with Los Angeles offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel moving from the sideline to the coaches booth to handle play-calling. McDaniel said the switch is meant to give him a cleaner view of the game and better communication with his staff, a small adjustment that can still matter when a team is trying to sort through its offensive issues.

It is a notable wrinkle for Houston because McDaniel will keep his play-calling responsibilities despite the Chargers rough start and 0-7 record. For the Texans, that means facing the same offensive voice, just from a different perch, and it adds another layer to a matchup already shaped by a team looking for answers. [Read more 🡒]

Texans Trade Deadline Focus Is Zeroing In On Two Trouble Spots

The Texans trade deadline plans are starting to come into focus, and the two spots drawing the most attention are running back and safety. According to Albert Breer, Houston has shown interest in adding help at both positions as injuries and uneven play have created some obvious pressure points on the roster.

With the deadline set for Nov. 10, the front office still has time to sort through the market and decide whether a move is worth making. For a team trying to stay balanced on both sides of the ball, those are the kinds of needs that can shape how aggressive it gets over the next few days. [Read more 🡒]
