The Texans are headed toward a decision on C.J. Stroud that could shape the franchise’s next move, and the market for him is not as straightforward as it looks.
Houston can go one of two ways: lock Stroud into a massive long-term extension, or, if talks break down, consider trading him. There’s no sign yet that Stroud is actually on the block. But if the Texans and Stroud can’t find common ground on a new deal, moving him would make more sense than letting him walk in free agency and losing him for nothing.
The tricky part is figuring out what he would bring back.
Around the league, opinions on Stroud’s trade value split fast. Some people still see a quarterback with major value. Others needed a long pause before answering, and one response from a team that already has its quarterback under contract was blunt: "I'm glad it's not my problem"
That uncertainty comes from the gap between Stroud’s regular-season résumé and what happened in the postseason. The 2023 second overall pick was rough in the playoffs, but he was still productive enough during the regular season.
His 11th-place finish in Total QBR put him ahead of Justin Herbert, Trevor Lawrence and Jared Goff. He’s also been an above-average quarterback despite playing behind shaky offensive lines and a run game that has offered almost no support.
And if wins matter most, Stroud is only the third quarterback in NFL history to win a playoff game in each of his first three pro seasons, joining Otto Graham and Russell Wilson.
Still, there are real questions about how much higher he can climb. His rookie year was fueled by an interception rate that was unusually low and by 8.2 yards per attempt, numbers he hasn’t come close to matching since. He looks better than a midlevel starter, but whether he has the kind of elite ceiling he flashed as a rookie is far less certain.
That’s what makes a potential trade so complicated. An interested team wouldn’t be buying Stroud on the cheap and then figuring out the rest later.
It would take multiple picks to get him, and then a long-term contract on top of that. Any team willing to pay that price would have to believe Stroud is the answer at quarterback for the long haul.
So if Houston reaches the point where an extension still isn’t in place, the pressure around Stroud’s future could ramp up fast. The value is there.
The price is huge. And that combination makes this one worth watching closely.
