Sunday NFL Countdown wasted no time getting into the C.J. Stroud conversation, and before Week 1 even began, the ESPN desk was already split.
The flashpoint came over Houston’s decision to table extension talks with Stroud for the year and revisit the contract after the season. That setup opened the door for a debate about where the Texans quarterback belongs in the league’s pay hierarchy, and Tedy Bruschi made his stance clear right away: Stroud is not there yet.
“C.J. Stroud wants to be paid like he’s one of the best quarterbacks in the league, and I’m just trying to read it,” Bruschi said.
“Yes, he is one of the best young quarterbacks in the NFL. Fact.
I mean, again, all this guy is done.”
Alex Smith pushed back immediately, arguing that Stroud’s situation should be weighed against the support other young quarterbacks have had around them, and he pointed to Patrick Mahomes’ early Kansas City setup as the comparison.
Bruschi wasn’t budging. He fired back that Stroud already has what he needs around him to win the way Houston wants to win, leaning heavily on the idea that the defense and run game should carry the load.
“He has a defense around him and a running game that he has to realize, and this particular team to win a championship,” Bruschi responded, pushing back further. “I know it’s Week 1… but to go far, the defense is going to lead them… I don’t want my quarterback wanting to throw for 4500 yards.”
The argument landed against a real backdrop of uncertainty for Stroud. He followed up his strong rookie year with an uneven 2025 regular season, throwing for 3,041 yards, 19 touchdowns and eight interceptions while missing three games because of a concussion.
Then came the playoff performance that only added to the questions, with New England intercepting him four times in the first half of last season’s AFC divisional round. Across two postseason games, he turned it over seven times.
Even with that noise, DeMeco Ryans has kept backing his quarterback publicly all offseason and has praised Stroud’s growth as a leader. Whether that confidence turns into a new deal will depend in large part on how Stroud answers the kind of scrutiny Bruschi put on him Sunday.
And Stroud’s start hasn’t exactly quieted anything. He fumbled on the final play against Buffalo, and the Bills escaped with a 36-31 win.
