The Denver Broncos are making moves in the backfield, claiming running back Cody Schrader off waivers from the Houston Texans, according to the NFL’s official transaction wire. In a corresponding roster shift, the team has placed defensive back Brandon Jones on injured reserve.
For Schrader, it’s another chapter in what’s already been a winding NFL journey - one that’s defined by grit, perseverance, and a relentless drive to prove he belongs. The 26-year-old’s path to the pros didn’t follow the traditional script.
He started his college career at Division II Truman State before betting on himself and walking on at Missouri. That gamble paid off in a big way.
Schrader not only earned the starting job but turned heads across the SEC, finishing his final season as a consensus All-American and first-team All-SEC selection.
Despite that standout college resume, Schrader went undrafted in 2024. The 49ers gave him his first NFL shot, signing him as a free agent after the draft.
But like so many undrafted rookies, he was waived at the end of the preseason. That marked the beginning of a whirlwind year.
The Rams were the first to claim him off waivers, and he managed to appear in one game for them last season. This year, he bounced between the Rams’ active roster and practice squad before the Jaguars signed him away.
Jacksonville, however, didn’t hold on for long - waiving him twice, once in October and again in December. That’s when the Texans stepped in, only to release him a few days later.
Now, it’s Denver’s turn to take a look. And while Schrader’s NFL stat sheet is still light, his college production speaks volumes.
In two seasons at Missouri, he carried the ball 446 times for 2,372 yards and 23 touchdowns. He also added 41 catches for 328 yards, showing he can contribute in the passing game as well.
For the Broncos, this is a low-risk move with potential upside. Schrader brings a physical running style and a proven work ethic - traits that could earn him a longer look in a backfield that’s still searching for consistency. And with Brandon Jones now on IR, the roster spot opens the door for Schrader to show what he can do in yet another NFL uniform.
He’s only appeared in one game this season - again with the Rams - but if his college career is any indication, Schrader’s story is far from finished.
