Brevin Jordan’s hold on a Texans roster spot is looking shaky, and the timing couldn’t be worse.
With Houston preparing to cut down to 53 players, the veteran tight end appears to be on the outside looking in after a training camp marred by injuries. Jordan has missed multiple weeks of practice, and that lost time has put him in a tough spot as the competition in the room keeps heating up.
ESPN’s DJ Bien-Aime originally had Jordan making Houston’s 53-man roster in his pre-training camp projection, but he’s changed course. In his latest prediction, Bien-Aime has the Texans keeping Dalton Schultz, Cade Stover, Marlin Klein and Foster Moreau at tight end while Jordan gets left off.
As Bien-Aime put it, "Brevin Jordan was originally on the pre-training camp list. But he's off it now because he's been dealing with camp injuries and has missed weeks of practice.
That's usually a recipe for not making the roster and Houston can save a million in cap space.”
That’s a tough turn for Jordan, who has been with the Texans since they took him in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL Draft. He has flashed as a pass catcher and has been part of the team’s tight end mix, but the combination of missed time and growing competition is making his path much harder.
The Texans, meanwhile, have plenty to like about the four tight ends Bien-Aime projects to survive the cut. Schultz brings the steady veteran presence.
Stover is still an intriguing young piece. Klein has already started turning heads after being selected in the second round this year, and he backed that up with a strong preseason debut that included a 31-yard catch and solid work as a blocker.
Moreau adds another layer of experience and versatility, giving Houston a tight end who can help in the run game and provide depth behind Schultz and the younger options.
For Jordan, the problem may be as simple as this: camp is where roster battles are won, and weeks spent watching instead of practicing can be fatal when every snap matters.
