Bills Lose CJ Gardner Johnson After Scary Camp Injury

The Buffalo Bills face a potential setback after new recruit CJ Gardner-Johnson sustains a significant injury during training camp, challenging their secondary depth and defensive planning.

The Buffalo Bills took a hit at training camp on Saturday morning when veteran safety CJ Gardner-Johnson was carted off the field after suffering a lower leg injury.

Gardner-Johnson went down during 11-on-11 drills, and trainers quickly escorted him to the medical tent before a team member drove him to the locker room. Multiple reports confirmed the injury involved his lower leg, and it appeared he was rolled up on when his right foot got caught. Staff spent several minutes examining the back of his leg.

It was a frustrating turn for a player who had been one of the early standouts in camp. Buffalo signed Gardner-Johnson this offseason to bring more fight and ball-hawking ability to the secondary, and coaches had projected him as the starting strong safety.

The veteran has made the rounds since entering the league as a fourth-round pick. He began his career with the Saints in 2019, then had stops with the Eagles twice, the Lions, the Texans and the Bears before landing in Buffalo.

The Bills wanted him to help bring more physicality to a secondary that needed it, and the early practices suggested he could provide exactly that.

Once Gardner-Johnson left the field, Geno Stone moved in with the starters alongside Cole Bishop, while rookie Jalon Kilgore remains in the mix at safety. If Gardner-Johnson misses significant time, that could open a real opportunity for the younger players.

The injury comes at a bad time for a defense still trying to settle in. Buffalo has made competition and depth a central theme of camp, and the early buzz around Gardner-Johnson had been positive. He brought the energy and instincts the coaching staff was looking for.

There was at least one encouraging sign: one report noted he could walk after the initial evaluation. Even so, further testing will determine how serious the issue is.

For now, the Bills are left waiting on more medical information while they continue to sort through options in the secondary. Depth has already been a focus after recent roster moves, and any extended absence would create a clear hole at strong safety.

Training camp injuries have a way of shifting the depth chart fast. Buffalo added Gardner-Johnson for his experience and toughness, and losing him even briefly would put the next man up to the test.

Tommy Togiai Is Giving Texans Fans A New Reason To Believe

Tommy Togiai has quietly turned himself into a real part of the Texans defensive front after spending earlier stretches of his career in a much smaller role. In 2025, he was on the field in 15 games and made six starts, setting career highs in tackles and tackles for loss while carving out the kind of steady presence Houston can lean on up front.

His rise has only gotten more attention in 2026 training camp, where DeMeco Ryans praised Togiais consistency and instincts as the Texans worked through a reshaped defensive line. Houston has added new pieces to that group, including Logan Hall and Kayden McDonald, but Togiais push to hold onto his place gives the unit an interesting layer as camp continues. [Read more 🡒]

Texans Bring Back Mario Edwards With Little Room To Coast

The Texans are bringing back Mario Edwards, a familiar face on the defensive line after two seasons in Houston. Edwards logged 27 games for the club over that span and made 12 starts, giving the staff a player who already knows the system and the demands of the role, even as his workload and production dipped last season. For a team looking to stabilize the front, the move adds a veteran option who can help bridge the gap between proven contributors and the rest of the depth chart.

Edwards will still have to earn his way onto the roster once camp opens, and Houston is not handing out anything based on name recognition alone. The Texans see him as depth and a steady presence, but the real test will come when the competition ramps up and he has to show he can carve out a spot again in a room where every snap will be accounted for. Kamari Ramsey Just Forced His Way Into The Texans Secondary Battle

Training camp has a way of reshuffling a depth chart, and Kamari Ramsey is making sure the Texans notice him. The rookie showed off the versatility that helped get him on the roster in the first place, working both as a safety and a nickel cornerback while turning in a play that stood out during team drills.

Ramsey still has a crowded path in front of him, with Jalen Pitre, Alijah Huzzie, Jaylen Reed and M.J. Stewart all in the mix for snaps in the secondary. For a young defensive back trying to carve out a role, the next few weeks will matter, and how he carries this momentum into preseason will go a long way toward shaping his place on the team.
