Tristen Newton's journey in the NBA has been a rollercoaster of resilience and determination. After being cut from the Minnesota Timberwolves during training camp, Newton found himself back in the G League before the Houston Rockets picked him up on a two-way contract in January. Yet, despite the back-and-forth nature of his career, Newton remains focused and driven.
Though he hasn't suited up for the Rockets yet, Newton has been a force in the G League. The life of a two-way player is often a balancing act between the NBA and its developmental league, a challenge Newton is all too familiar with. Drafted 49th overall by the Indiana Pacers in 2024, he spent part of his rookie season there before moving to the Timberwolves and now the Rockets.
Newton's G League performance has been nothing short of impressive. He's played in 49 games this season, splitting his time between the Iowa Wolves and the Rio Grande Valley Vipers.
Averaging 25.8 points, 5.1 rebounds, 5.4 assists, and 2.0 steals per game, he's shooting an efficient 47.9% from the field, 36.7% from beyond the arc, and 86% from the free-throw line. His standout play earned him a spot in the Rising Stars competition over All-Star Weekend, where he got the chance to shine alongside other promising talents.
Reflecting on this opportunity, Newton shared, "Growing up, watching All-Star games, you dream of being there. Participating in All-Star Weekend is a dream come true." He fondly remembers the 2016 Dunk Contest with Zach LaVine and Aaron Gordon as a highlight of his childhood fandom.
Newton's path to the NBA is rooted in his time at UConn, where he was part of a remarkable team that went 37-3 and clinched a national championship. Alongside fellow UConn alumni Stephon Castle, Donovan Clingan, and Cam Spencer, Newton's collegiate success has translated into opportunities at the professional level.
"It was a very special group," Newton remarked. "Four of the five starters on that team were in the Rising Stars game. It shows a lot about UConn and the work we put in."
While Newton is still waiting for his big break in the NBA, he's learning from each team he's been with-the Pacers, Timberwolves, and now the Rockets. His goal remains clear: to secure a standard NBA contract and make a significant impact.
"I'm still learning day to day," Newton stated. "I'm trying to get that guaranteed NBA contract. It's about showing teams and coaches that I'm all in and ready for the moment whenever it comes."
Newton's journey is a testament to perseverance and the relentless pursuit of a dream. As he continues to hone his craft, the NBA world should keep an eye on this rising star.
