The San Antonio Spurs may already be lining up the next step in their backcourt plan, and it starts with Dylan Harper. After coming up just short in the NBA Finals last season, the Spurs are clearly operating like a team that thinks it’s close - and they’ve got the young talent to back that up.
Harper and Stephon Castle have become the center of the conversation, with their pairing drawing a big-time comparison from Charles Barkley.
“If I’m a guard in the NBA, I do not want to see them boys the next 10 years. They’re going to be the new Steph and Klay,” NBA legend Charles Barkley said.
That kind of buzz only adds to the growing belief around Harper inside the organization. ESPN’s Brian Windhorst said the Spurs see him as their No. 2 option behind Victor Wembanyama.
“The Spurs internally believe Dylan Harper is their second best player. That’s not a slight on De'Aaron Fox or Stephon Castle. Harper is a stud,” ESPN’s Brian Windhorst said.
With Harper climbing that quickly, a De’Aaron Fox trade starts to make more sense. Bleacher Report’s Greg Swartz floated a deal that would send Fox to the Houston Rockets in exchange for Fred VanVleet and Jabari Smith Jr.
“For the Spurs, a return of VanVleet and his expiring $25 million salary and Jabari Smith Jr. would be enough to make the money work. Fox is the best overall player in the deal, although San Antonio would get off of his four-year, $221 million contract and open up a starting job for Harper, which is the ultimate goal here. Houston could ask for some draft compensation in return given the heftiness of Fox's contract, even if the two-time All-Star is a major upgrade over VanVleet,” Swartz wrote.
VanVleet is on an expiring $25 million contract, while Smith would give San Antonio another young piece to fold into the core. For the Spurs, the appeal is obvious: clear the path for Harper, move off Fox’s four-year, $221 million deal, and keep building around a group that already looks loaded for the long haul.

Kyrie And KD Reunion Buzz Just Hit A Nerve For Mavericks Fans
Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving have shared plenty of basketball history, and the conversation around them picked up again ahead of an NBA exhibition game between the Rockets and Mavericks. The two former teammates exchanged mutual praise, with Durant singling out Irvings skill set and Irving returning the compliment, a reminder of how naturally their names still travel together whenever one of them is in the spotlight.
For Houston fans, it is mostly background noise attached to a game on the schedule, but it has stirred the kind of chatter that tends to follow Irving wherever he goes. His future has been a topic of speculation, and any reunion talk with Durant tends to get louder fast, even as Irvings current focus remains on Dallas and the season ahead. [Read more 🡒]
Kevin Durant Faces Growing Pressure In Houston For One Big Reason
Kevin Durant arrived in Houston with the kind of rsum that usually quiets a room, not complicates it, and on paper he has delivered like the centerpiece the Rockets hoped for. He led the team last season with 26.0 points, 5.5 rebounds and 4.8 assists while earning All-NBA Second Team honors, a reminder that his production is still elite even as the franchise tries to sort out its long-term direction around him.
Still, Durants presence has come with a heavier conversation attached, one that has lingered through the offseason as trade speculation keeps circling. Houston is expected to keep him at least through next summer, but the larger question is how much of the Rockets leadership load he should be asked to carry once the roster is back to full strength, especially with Fred VanVleets return giving the team another experienced voice in the mix. Rockets Lineup Questions Suddenly Get Real Before A Rare Preseason Trip
The Rockets are about to get a very different kind of preseason test, one that stretches well beyond the usual gym in Houston. With the NBA China Games on the calendar, the team is headed to Macau for a pair of exhibition meetings with the Mavericks at The Venetian Arena, a backdrop that turns a routine tune-up into a showcase event with extra attention from NBA TV.
For Ime Udoka, the trip comes with the added bonus of having a deeper group available to sort through the early rotation puzzle. Fred VanVleet, Kevin Durant, Steven Adams and Marcus Smart are expected to be in uniform, giving Houston a chance to see how new combinations might look before the games start to count, while the off-court slate of youth clinics and community appearances adds another layer to a rare international road swing.
