Earlier this week, CBS unveiled their post-trade deadline NBA front office rankings, and the Oklahoma City Thunder unsurprisingly took the top spot. However, what caught many off guard was the Houston Rockets' impressive positioning. They ranked just behind the Boston Celtics, making them the second-highest-ranked front office in the Western Conference, surpassing notable teams like the San Antonio Spurs, Denver Nuggets, and Minnesota Timberwolves.
The Thunder's front office has been a model of excellence. Their strategic moves, like acquiring Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in the Paul George trade, drafting key rotation players such as AJ Mitchell with the 38th pick, and securing Isiah Hartenstein on a frontloaded contract, have set them apart. Their ability to develop talent, even curating their head coach from the G League, showcases a masterclass in roster construction.
As for the Celtics, their front office deserves credit for navigating financial challenges following Jayson Tatum's injury. Last May, they faced a daunting half-billion-dollar payroll, compounded by the historic repeater tax. Yet, they managed to slide below the second apron and dodge the luxury tax without sacrificing a single first-round pick.
Houston's ranking above San Antonio might raise eyebrows, especially given the Spurs' recent draft history. However, CBS's Sam Quin pointed out that while the Spurs' success has hinged on lottery luck, the Rockets' potential championship path seems less reliant on fortune. The decision to pass on Stephon Castle for Reed Sheppard is proving wise, as Sheppard shines in his sophomore season.
As the Rockets gear up to face the Hornets in Charlotte post-All-Star break, fans can tune in at 6:00 p.m. Central on SPCHN or NBA League Pass. Stay connected for more pre- and post-game insights here at Dreamshake.
