Rockets Shake Up Starting Lineup Before Playoffs

As the playoffs loom, Rockets coach Ime Udoka experiments with new starting lineups, bringing back Tari Eason and considering Reed Sheppard for pivotal roles.

In a strategic move, Rockets head coach Ime Udoka has decided to reintroduce Tari Eason into the starting lineup, replacing Reed Sheppard for at least one game. This decision comes as the Rockets face off against the New York Knicks, a formidable opponent with a 48-27 record.

Eason's return to the starting five alongside Amen Thompson, Kevin Durant, Jabari Smith Jr., and Alperen Sengun is all about matchups. Eason offers more size and defensive versatility, which could be crucial against the Knicks. On the other hand, Sheppard is known for his shooting and ball-handling skills, adding a different dynamic to the team.

Udoka hasn't committed to making this lineup change permanent. Throughout the 2025-26 NBA season, the Rockets have experimented with different players in this role, including Steven Adams, Josh Okogie, Eason, and Sheppard.

Eason's performance in recent games has been impressive. Over the weekend, he helped secure victories against the Memphis Grizzlies and New Orleans Pelicans, averaging 15.5 points with solid shooting percentages and 7.5 rebounds in about 25.5 minutes per game.

Meanwhile, Sheppard has hit a rough patch, struggling with his shooting over the last four games. He's been shooting just 31.4% overall and 27.8% from beyond the arc, despite taking nine attempts per game.

Looking ahead, the Rockets' schedule includes games against the Milwaukee Bucks and Utah Jazz, teams that, on paper, present less of a challenge than New York. Udoka suggested that Sheppard might return to the starting lineup for the game against the Bucks, but the long-term plan remains fluid. Since Sheppard's initial start on March 20, Udoka has been clear that the lineup would be evaluated as the playoffs approach.

With only six regular-season games remaining after Wednesday, Udoka emphasized the importance of establishing a consistent starting five as the team gears up for the postseason.
