The Rockets may be staring at the same Kevin Durant trap that once swallowed the Thunder.
Durant is in Houston now, but the long-term picture is far from settled. He is under contract for next season, yet he has a player option for the following year. That means if he declines that option in the summer of 2027, he could walk into unrestricted free agency and choose his next destination.
That is the nightmare Houston has to keep in mind. The Rockets have already made smart long-term commitments to their young core this offseason, but Durant is not locked in beyond 2027.
If the team wants more than a short stopover, it will need to give him a reason to believe the title chase is real. That could mean adding more proven offensive help around him or even making a coaching change.
At 37, Durant is at the stage where every season matters, and he does not have many All-Star years left.
The danger is obvious: if Houston gets no meaningful playoff success and then loses Durant for nothing, it would be a crushing outcome. When the Rockets traded for him, the message was clear - they were going after contention now. But even a year after landing him, that championship vision still feels a ways off.
Next season should give Houston a more balanced roster, but the Rockets still sit behind the best teams in the West. Durant will still be asked to carry a huge chunk of the scoring load, even with the return of key veterans and the new additions around him.
There is, however, another path if Houston wants to avoid the Thunder’s old disaster. Durant has already moved through four previous franchises, and three of them at least managed to recover assets when he left.
Even Golden State, which lost him in free agency in 2019, came away with D'Angelo Russell in a sign-and-trade. Russell was later dealt for Andrew Wiggins, who went on to be the second-best player on a championship team in 2022.
Oklahoma City was the exception, the team that got left empty-handed. If the Rockets want to make sure they are not the next team in that category, they may want to start assessing Durant’s trade value this season. He would still bring back a substantial package from a contender that needs more scoring, and that kind of return could help Houston pivot toward a younger timeline if it comes to that.
