The Houston Rockets have locked in one of the cornerstones of their future, agreeing to a five-year, $208 million rookie-scale extension with Amen Thompson.
ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that the deal also includes a 10% trade kicker, adding another layer of protection as Thompson moves into the next stage of his career. He was eligible for a five-year, $251 million max rookie-scale extension, but ended up taking a lesser number in the final agreement.
For Houston, this is a major show of faith in a player who has quickly become one of the team’s brightest young talents.
Thompson, 23, entered the league as the No. 4 overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft and has grown into a much bigger role over his first three seasons. His best work came last season, when he averaged 18.3 points, 7.8 rebounds, 5.3 assists, and 1.5 steals per game while shooting 53.4% from the field. He also led the NBA in minutes played with 2,943, a clear sign of how heavily the Rockets leaned on him.
Even with a shaky outside shot - he hit just 21.6% from three-point range - Thompson found plenty of ways to tilt games. He made his mark in transition, on cuts, on the glass, as a defender, and as a playmaker.
That defense is still the calling card. After the 2024-25 season, Thompson earned his first All-Defensive First Team selection and has established himself as one of the league’s most disruptive perimeter stoppers.
His size, length, speed, and athleticism let him cover multiple positions, giving Houston real flexibility on that end of the floor. He also finished eighth in total steals and fourth in loose ball recoveries last season.
The numbers around him are eye-opening, too. Thompson was one of only nine players in the NBA to average at least 18 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists last season, and Houston clearly sees him as part of that do-everything group.
The new extension will kick in after the final year of his rookie deal, keeping him in Houston through much of his prime. It also strengthens a core that already includes Alperen Sengun, Jabari Smith Jr., Reed Sheppard, and Tari Eason.
And there’s still more upside to chase. Thompson’s offensive ceiling could jump again if his three-point shot ever gets close to league average. He already scores efficiently inside the arc, rebounds like a forward, handles the ball, creates for others, and defends at an elite level.
