Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving didn’t need much time in Macao to set off a fresh wave of Rockets trade chatter.
The two stars were seen talking at midcourt ahead of Houston’s preseason game against Dallas, and that was enough to send fans straight back to the familiar 2019 script. Back then, an All-Star Game conversation helped tip off their decision to team up.
Durant left the Warriors, Irving left the Celtics, and both landed with the Brooklyn Nets in free agency. This time, they’re under contract - but Irving’s situation in Dallas has already become a topic of speculation.
That makes the conversation feel a lot bigger than a casual catch-up. The Mavericks are building around 19-year-old Cooper Flagg, and Irving doesn’t exactly match that timeline.
He’s also working back from a torn ACL, and Dallas wants him to get on the floor and show he’s still a star, which would only help his trade value. Even so, he remains the kind of second option plenty of teams would want, especially after helping the Mavs reach the 2024 NBA Finals.
Houston is one of those teams that fits the rumor mill perfectly. The Rockets are under real pressure after getting bounced in the first round by the Lakers without Luka Doncic, and Ime Udoka is feeling plenty of it.
The front office added Marcus Smart and Bogdan Bogdanovic to the mix, and Fred VanVleet and Steven Adams are expected back from injuries, but the offense still has questions when the biggest moments arrive. Kyrie would answer that in a hurry.
Durant’s conversation with Irving quickly made its way online when the NBA posted the moment on Oct. 8, along with the line: “Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving link up in Macao! 🤝

The reaction came fast, and it came exactly the way you’d expect.
“They getting ready to team up again soon, it’s all part of the script.”
“This is a trade waiting to happen”
The Brooklyn chapter is part of why the speculation has so much fuel behind it. Durant missed the entire 2019-20 season while recovering from a torn Achilles, then the Nets’ best run ended with that infamous toe-on-the-line loss to the Bucks in seven games. That second-round exit was as far as Brooklyn ever went before the roster, and eventually the Harden era, fell apart.
Now both players are in different spots, but the overlap is still there. Durant wants to chase a championship and Houston is built like a ready-made playoff team with young talent.
Irving, meanwhile, has already won a title and played in three NBA Finals. He’s spoken positively about Dallas recently, but if the Mavericks slide and the deadline gets closer, his name figures to show up in the rumor mill again.
That’s why the sight of Durant and Irving chatting in China hit so hard. Fans immediately connected the dots: the Rockets need shot creation, Dallas could eventually consider moving Kyrie, and Houston has the kind of roster that could let the two longtime friends try to finish the job they never completed in Brooklyn.

Amen Thompson Looks Ready For The Leap Rockets Fans Want
Since the James Harden trade in 2021, the Rockets have been built around the patient work of the draft, and Amen Thompson has quickly become one of the clearest reasons for optimism. He has already established himself as one of the NBAs best defensive players, and his offensive game has taken enough of a step forward that Houston rewarded him with a new long-term commitment.
Now the next phase is about expanding what he can do with the ball and whether his growing all-around game can take another leap. The Rockets brought in shooting specialist Chip Engelland to help sharpen Thompsons offensive toolkit as he enters his fourth season, a move that underscores how much the organization believes there is still room for him to grow into something even bigger. Rockets Face A Kyrie Wrinkle In Macau This Weekend
Kyrie Irving is set to make his return to the floor this weekend in Macao, but the Rockets will see him only once over the two-game set. After a 19-month absence that included an ACL tear and a calf strain, the Mavericks point guard is back in the mix, and his workload is being handled carefully as Dallas continues easing him into action.
Mavericks coach Dusty May said the team still has not settled on which of the two games Irving will play, with the decision tied to how he looks physically. For Houston, it adds a small wrinkle to an overseas trip already carrying extra attention, especially with Ime Udokas team still being evaluated early in the season and the West starting to take shape around them. Rockets Face One Huge Question In A Possible Karl-Anthony Towns Deal
Karl-Anthony Towns has become one of the more interesting names to monitor as the NBA rumor mill shifts into overdrive, and the Houston Rockets are the sort of team that can at least be mentioned in the conversation. Towns blend of size, scoring touch and veteran experience makes him an appealing fit on paper for a roster that is still sorting out its long-term shape, especially if Houston wants another frontcourt piece with a different offensive profile.
The challenge, of course, is what a deal like that would actually cost. Any serious pursuit would force the Rockets to weigh the value of their current young core against the chance to add a proven star, and that is where the real tension starts. Houston has the assets to make noise, but whether it would be willing to part with the kind of player New York would surely demand is the part that keeps this from being a simple fit-and-forget trade idea.
