Rockets Face One Trade Debate That Could Shape Their Title Push

With the Houston Rockets eyeing a major trade to elevate their standing in the Western Conference, speculation centers around De'Aaron Fox and Kyrie Irving as potential game-changers.

The Houston Rockets look built to stay in the mix next season, but the conversation around their roster has already turned toward the one move that could push them closer to the top of the Western Conference.

Kevin Durant, Alperen Sengun and Amen Thompson give Houston a star foundation with real upside, and Jabari Smith Jr., Reed Sheppard and Fred VanVleet are expected to add more support. Even so, the Rockets are still viewed as a step behind the league’s best teams, with the San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder sitting at the front of the line in the West.

That leaves Houston with an obvious question before February’s trade deadline: where is the biggest upgrade to be found?

Point guard stands out. VanVleet is coming back from a season-ending ACL injury, and Sheppard is still early in his NBA journey. That makes the position the clearest place for Houston to search for more punch, especially if the front office wants to turn strong momentum into something bigger.

One suggested target is De’Aaron Fox. The case for him is straightforward: Houston needs a higher-level point guard, and Fox could provide that while the Spurs appear better positioned to make Dylan Harper the priority. In that scenario, a deal sending Tari Eason, VanVleet and Clint Capela to Sacramento, along with a first-round pick, was floated as a possible fit for both sides.

Another path points closer to home. One view is that VanVleet’s value lies in keeping the offense organized, but he is not the kind of player who changes everything. Kyrie Irving, on the other hand, was described as a stronger swing - healthy again after a torn ACL and still with what was called one more strong run left in him.

The Durant connection matters, too. Irving and Durant have mutual respect, even though their Brooklyn stint never fully clicked, and the idea is that Houston’s supporting cast could make that pairing tough to guard.

The challenge, as always, is the price. Irving makes about $14 million more than Durant, so getting there would require more than Capela’s contract.

VanVleet and Tari Eason were named as the kind of pieces Dallas would want, with a pick possibly added to the mix.

The logic behind that route is simple: if the Rockets want to maximize Durant’s window, Irving offers a better shot than VanVleet.

Ime Udoka Pressure Is Rising As Rockets Expectations Change

Ime Udoka arrived in Houston with the kind of rsum that usually buys a coach some patience. He got his start as a head coach in Boston, picked up a pair of Coach of the Month honors and guided the Celtics to the NBA Finals, which made his hiring in 2023 feel like a big-swing move for a Rockets team trying to move back into relevance.

Now the temperature around that move is changing. Houston has yet to get past the first round since Udoka took over, and with the roster viewed as capable of more, the expectations have shifted from progress to results. The Rockets no longer look like a team that can be judged only by development, which means Udoka is being measured more by how far this group can go when the games matter most. [Read more 🡒]

Rockets Face A Kevin Durant Decision That Could Reshape Everything

The Rockets 2024-25 season was shaped as much by what went wrong around the roster as by anything happening on the floor. Injuries to key veterans like Fred VanVleet and Steven Adams left Houston without the kind of steadying presence a young team leans on, and the result was a season in which leadership and consistency were hard to come by.

That backdrop is part of why the Durant chatter has real weight in Houston, even with the team trying to build around its developing core. Trade conversations have already surfaced, and the Rockets are clearly open enough to the idea that this is not a simple star-for-stars situation, especially with one of the more discussed paths involving New York and a package aimed at helping both sides chase their preferred timeline. Kyrie Irving Suddenly Feels Like Dallas Biggest Cooper Flagg Question

The Rockets saw a familiar rival get an early preseason win, with Dallas beating Houston while Kyrie Irving chipped in 17 points. For the Mavericks, the night was supposed to be another reminder of the plan to build around Irving and Cooper Flagg, a pairing meant to bridge the present and future as the franchise tries to stay competitive in the West.

But the long view around Dallas is already getting complicated. NBA insider Jake Fischer reported that Irvings place in that future may not be as secure as the team would like, with his age and contract situation keeping him in the conversation as the season moves toward the February 11 trade deadline. Dallas also does not control next years draft pick, a reality that makes the calculus around Irvings future even more interesting as the Mavericks weigh how patient they can afford to be.
