The Rockets’ Kevin Durant dilemma is already hanging over the season, and it starts with a simple question: will Houston trade him before the deadline?
That’s the angle driving the latest SB Nation Reacts survey of NBA fans, including Rockets supporters. The debate around Durant in Houston has been loud, and not everyone is buying the fit.
Some fans are firmly out on him. The criticism is blunt: Durant remains an elite one-on-one scorer, but the view here is that he brings too much baggage as a leader and teammate, and too much of a negative presence in the room. The argument goes even further than fit on the court - the basic claim is that the Rockets were no better with Durant than they were without him.
A recent ESPN report by Tim MacMahon added fuel to that view by pointing directly at Durant in discussing Houston’s locker room issues last season, which were described as “turmoil”. MacMahon laid it out this way:
“There were issues of connectivity in the Rockets’ locker room. [Fred] VanVleet directly and significantly impacts both of those issues,” said Tim MacMahon.
“Kevin Durant was part of both of those problems. I would say you could even say Kevin Durant was at the top of the list of both of those problems.
At the same time, KD was kind of thrust into - I’m not going to say unfair - but a position that didn’t play to his strengths, having to be the primary initiator down the stretch of games, having to be the default leader, the guy most responsible for the mood of the locker room. Those don’t play to his strengths.
Those do play to Fred VanVleet’s strengths, and kind of take those burdens off of KD’s shoulders this year.”
That report matters because it feeds directly into the fear that if things go sideways again, Durant could simply decide he’s done. He has a player option next season, which gives him a clear route to walk away. If that happens, Houston would be staring at the worst-case outcome: losing him for nothing.
That’s why the deadline is already part of the conversation. If the Rockets don’t see enough progress this season, the logic is straightforward - they may need to move Durant before this year’s deadline rather than risk getting left empty-handed.

Ime Udoka Pressure Is Rising As Rockets Expectations Change
Ime Udoka arrived in Houston with the kind of rsum that usually buys a coach some patience. He got his start as a head coach in Boston, picked up a pair of Coach of the Month honors and guided the Celtics to the NBA Finals, which made his hiring in 2023 feel like a big-swing move for a Rockets team trying to move back into relevance.
Now the temperature around that move is changing. Houston has yet to get past the first round since Udoka took over, and with the roster viewed as capable of more, the expectations have shifted from progress to results. The Rockets no longer look like a team that can be judged only by development, which means Udoka is being measured more by how far this group can go when the games matter most. [Read more 🡒]
Rockets Face A Kevin Durant Decision That Could Reshape Everything
The Rockets 2024-25 season was shaped as much by what went wrong around the roster as by anything happening on the floor. Injuries to key veterans like Fred VanVleet and Steven Adams left Houston without the kind of steadying presence a young team leans on, and the result was a season in which leadership and consistency were hard to come by.
That backdrop is part of why the Durant chatter has real weight in Houston, even with the team trying to build around its developing core. Trade conversations have already surfaced, and the Rockets are clearly open enough to the idea that this is not a simple star-for-stars situation, especially with one of the more discussed paths involving New York and a package aimed at helping both sides chase their preferred timeline. Kyrie Irving Suddenly Feels Like Dallas Biggest Cooper Flagg Question
The Rockets saw a familiar rival get an early preseason win, with Dallas beating Houston while Kyrie Irving chipped in 17 points. For the Mavericks, the night was supposed to be another reminder of the plan to build around Irving and Cooper Flagg, a pairing meant to bridge the present and future as the franchise tries to stay competitive in the West.
But the long view around Dallas is already getting complicated. NBA insider Jake Fischer reported that Irvings place in that future may not be as secure as the team would like, with his age and contract situation keeping him in the conversation as the season moves toward the February 11 trade deadline. Dallas also does not control next years draft pick, a reality that makes the calculus around Irvings future even more interesting as the Mavericks weigh how patient they can afford to be.
