Marcus Smart Sent A Message As Rockets Beat Boston

Marcus Smart made a memorable return to face his former team by making back-to-back threes and expressing lingering emotions from his trade, sparking conversation and celebration in the Rockets' victory.

Marcus Smart made sure Monday night carried a little extra edge.

In the Houston Rockets’ 109-93 win over the Boston Celtics at Toyota Center, Smart delivered the kind of sequence that can flip a game and stir up a crowd. Early in the fourth quarter, he buried back-to-back 3-pointers to help Houston open things up, then responded with the double birds.

Smart later explained that the gesture was not just about the shot-making.

“Just a lot of pent-up, I guess you can call it, emotions,” Smart said, via the Rockets. “And plus certain guys on the bench was talking.

Didn’t know who. So I just heard them say something.

So I let him hear right back.”

The reaction made a little more sense considering the opponent. Smart spent his first nine NBA seasons with Boston before the Celtics sent him to the Memphis Grizzlies in June 2023 as part of the three-team deal that brought Kristaps Porzingis to Boston. Then the Celtics won the NBA title in 2024, which likely hasn’t sat especially well with him.

Add in some chatter from the Celtics bench, and Smart’s response fit the moment. He may also be looking at a fine.

On the floor, the night started rough for Smart. He missed his first seven shots before finally knocking down those two threes that helped put the game away. He finished with eight points on 2-10 shooting, plus four rebounds, four assists, and two steals.

That stat line looked a lot like a Marcus Smart game: not always pretty, but full of hustle, physicality, and winning plays. When asked afterward if he had extra energy against Boston, he didn’t hide it.

“For sure,” Smart said. “You always want to do good against your former team and show them that you still can go out there and do what you do, right?

So definitely felt good, energy was there. They know what I can do, and reminded them again tonight.”

Boston knows that well. The Celtics took Smart with the No. 6 pick in the 2014 NBA Draft, and he became a favorite in the city for the way he threw himself into every possession.

Houston, meanwhile, keeps rolling. The win pushed the Rockets to 7-1, good for the joint-best record in the NBA right now.

The Rockets are back at Toyota Center on Wednesday night against the Minnesota Timberwolves at 8:30 p.m. ET.

Jabari Smith Jr Just Opened A Bigger Option For The Rockets

Jabari Smith Jr. has spent much of his Rockets career being asked to stretch the floor, but against the Celtics he showed there is more to his value than spacing and shot-making. With Houston short on its usual backup centers, Smith handled a bigger defensive load and spent long stretches absorbing the kind of physical work that usually falls to a true rim protector.

The result was a glimpse of a different lineup path for Houston, one that could matter whenever injuries or matchup concerns force the coaching staff to get creative. Smith helped keep the Rockets competitive on the glass and held up well against Bostons size, which only adds to the sense that his evolving role may give this team another option when the rotation gets tight. Rockets Exposed A Celtics Flaw Joe Mazzulla Couldnt Ignore

The Celtics 109-93 loss to the Rockets on Tuesday did more than snap a five-game winning streak. It also forced Joe Mazzulla to confront a problem that has been building in Bostons frontcourt, where Mitchell Robinson has not been producing on the glass the way the Celtics need him to, and the teams defensive rebounding percentage has slipped into the lower tier of the league.

Mazzulla pointed to a schematic issue in how Robinson is being deployed, with the big man spending more time away from the rim than in the kind of spots where he can create extra possessions. For a Celtics team that has leaned on size and physicality to cover for other issues, the rebounding drop-off is becoming harder to ignore, and the Houston game offered a clear reminder that the margin for error shrinks fast when those second-chance battles go the other way. DeMarcus Cousins Just Raised The Stakes For These Rockets

DeMarcus Cousins has seen enough to believe the Rockets belong in the championship conversation, and he made clear he thinks this group has the talent and depth to chase a title this season. He pointed to Houstons recent win over the Celtics as a sign of just how high the ceiling can be when the roster is clicking, with Kevin Durant adding 12 points in that matchup as part of the broader evidence Cousins used to support his case.

The bigger question, as Cousins framed it, is whether Houston can keep itself intact long enough to navigate a loaded Western Conference. The Rockets have the kind of roster that can make noise when healthy, but in a conference with little room for error, availability may end up mattering as much as star power or depth. [Read more 🡒]
