Kyrie And KD Reunion Buzz Just Hit A Nerve For Mavericks Fans

As the Mavericks and Rockets prepare for an exhibition showdown in Macao, Kyrie Irving reflects on Kevin Durant's high praise while rumors heat up about a possible reunion.

Kevin Durant didn’t exactly leave much on the table when asked which skill from another player he’d want for his own game.

Ahead of the NBA exhibition game in Macao on October 9, where Durant and the Houston Rockets are scheduled to meet Kyrie Irving and the Dallas Mavericks, the 38-year-old was asked by the league’s social media team to pick one thing he’d add to his arsenal. Durant’s answer came fast.

“None, because I feel like I have them all… I would say Kyrie’s ball-handling,” he said.

Irving caught wind of that praise and treated it like exactly what it was: a serious compliment from a close friend and longtime teammate.

“Shoutout to my brother KD man. All respect, it’s mutual. When I hear him name-drop me like that, I take that as a compliment for something he would steal from my game, or something that he appreciates me for.”

“It’s a great deal and a nod to him. I love you, brother.

I wish I could steal a few things from you, too. But at the same time I love competing against you, and showing you what I got.

And I know the feeling is mutual, so all respect,” Irving responded.

The praise makes sense. Durant’s game has never been short on scoring tools, but his handle has long been the one area that gets picked apart. His turnovers and his struggles as the main playmaker in clutch moments were a problem for the Rockets, especially with Fred VanVleet out.

Give Durant Irving’s handle, though, and the offensive ceiling would get even sillier.

The two stars know each other well. They played together in Brooklyn for four seasons with the Nets before splitting in 2023, after Durant requested a trade and Irving publicly opposed New York’s pandemic policies.

Even now, the idea of a reunion hasn’t gone away. Irving has been tied to Durant in Houston in rumors, especially with the Mavericks possibly headed toward a full rebuild around Cooper Flagg and the Rockets positioned to make a strong offer.

For now, though, Irving says he’s staying put in Dallas. The Mavericks’ front office also says he’s part of the long-term plan, even if the business of basketball can change everything in a hurry.

Rockets Suddenly Linked To A De'Aaron Fox Move That Changes Everything

The Spurs long-term plan is starting to take shape around their young backcourt, with Dylan Harper and Stephon Castle drawing the kind of internal confidence that suggests San Antonio is already thinking beyond the present. Reports have even gone so far as to describe Harper as the franchises second-best player behind Victor Wembanyama, which is the sort of belief that naturally starts pushing established names toward the trade market.

For Houston, that has created an unexpected watch item around DeAaron Fox, whose fit with the Rockets would be obvious on paper and sudden in practice. A deal of this size would ripple well beyond one roster swap, reshaping the guard picture in San Antonio and putting Houston in the middle of a conversation it did not seem to be having just days ago. Kevin Durant Faces Growing Pressure In Houston For One Big Reason

Kevin Durant arrived in Houston with the kind of rsum that usually quiets a room, not complicates it, and on paper he has delivered like the centerpiece the Rockets hoped for. He led the team last season with 26.0 points, 5.5 rebounds and 4.8 assists while earning All-NBA Second Team honors, a reminder that his production is still elite even as the franchise tries to sort out its long-term direction around him.

Still, Durants presence has come with a heavier conversation attached, one that has lingered through the offseason as trade speculation keeps circling. Houston is expected to keep him at least through next summer, but the larger question is how much of the Rockets leadership load he should be asked to carry once the roster is back to full strength, especially with Fred VanVleets return giving the team another experienced voice in the mix. Rockets Lineup Questions Suddenly Get Real Before A Rare Preseason Trip

The Rockets are about to get a very different kind of preseason test, one that stretches well beyond the usual gym in Houston. With the NBA China Games on the calendar, the team is headed to Macau for a pair of exhibition meetings with the Mavericks at The Venetian Arena, a backdrop that turns a routine tune-up into a showcase event with extra attention from NBA TV.

For Ime Udoka, the trip comes with the added bonus of having a deeper group available to sort through the early rotation puzzle. Fred VanVleet, Kevin Durant, Steven Adams and Marcus Smart are expected to be in uniform, giving Houston a chance to see how new combinations might look before the games start to count, while the off-court slate of youth clinics and community appearances adds another layer to a rare international road swing.
