Fred VanVleet’s return was the headliner at Toyota Center on Wednesday, and the Rockets guard wasted little time making his presence felt against the Mavericks.
Back in the starting lineup alongside Amen Thompson, Kevin Durant, Jabari Smith Jr. and Alperen Sengun, VanVleet checked into a game for Houston after being sidelined more than 500 days. The first basket came quickly. At the 8:55 mark of the opening quarter, he drilled a three-pointer to pull the Rockets even at 5-5.
VanVleet’s comeback comes after he tore his ACL in the offseason in 2025. Houston managed to keep rolling without him, finishing 52-30 behind Durant and Sengun and earning a playoff berth, though the Rockets fell to the Los Angeles Lakers in the first round.
Now, VanVleet is back to give Houston what it has been missing: a steady floor general who can set the tempo, run the offense and make the kinds of decisions that matter late. The Rockets already have plenty of talent, but his experience gives the group another layer, especially when games tighten up.
Coach Ime Udoka is expected to ease him back gradually as he works toward full form.
With VanVleet back in the mix, Houston can start thinking bigger. The Rockets have not reached the conference finals since 2018, and his return gives them another piece for a possible deeper playoff run.
At the time of writing, Houston held the lead in the second quarter. VanVleet had three points, three assists and one steal. Durant had 16 points, five rebounds, one assist and one block, while Smith also had 16 points, along with two rebounds, one assist and one steal.

Mavericks Opener Took A Heated Turn That Changed The Night
Tari Easons first regular season game since signing his new deal got away from him almost immediately, turning a normal opener into an early flashpoint. The Rockets wing was in the middle of a physical sequence with P.J. Washington, and the officials quickly moved from a flagrant foul to an ejection, sending Eason to the locker room minutes into the night.
For Houston, it was an abrupt detour from the kind of start it probably envisioned after locking up one of its tougher rotation pieces. Even without Eason, the Rockets settled in and built a significant lead by halftime, a reminder that the opener was already taking on an odd shape long before the final horn. [Read more 🡒]
Rockets Could Be Watching One Huge Mavericks Decision Closely
Kyrie Irvings future in Dallas has become one of the leagues more closely watched side plots, and it naturally has ripple effects for Houston as well. Irving has said he wants to stay with the Mavericks, but the steady buzz around his situation has kept rival front offices paying attention, especially if Dallas ever had to seriously weigh a change.
For the Rockets, the intrigue is tied to the kind of star movement that can reshape the Western Conference in a hurry. Nothing official has happened, and all of the talk remains speculative, but Houston is the sort of team that would be mentioned whenever a high-end scorer with an uncertain path suddenly becomes available. The question is whether Dallas ever gets pushed far enough to make that possibility real. [Read more 🡒]
Pistons Offseason Aggression Was Bigger Than Fans Realized
Houston spent much of last season trying to sort out its own uneven rhythm, with injuries to Steven Adams and Fred VanVleet cutting into the leadership and playmaking the Rockets needed to stay steady. Even after landing Kevin Durant, the sense around the league was not that Houston had built a locked-down, untouchable core, but rather one that could still be part of broader offseason conversations as teams explored different ways to reshape their rosters.
Detroit was one of the clubs poking around in those talks, reportedly asking about Durant during the offseason as it weighed whether to add more veteran firepower around its young group. Nothing came together, and the Pistons kept their younger players in place, but the inquiry alone says plenty about how aggressively they were looking to move upward, even if the final outcome left the bigger question hanging.
