Fred VanVleet is closing in on the finish line of his ACL rehab, and Ime Udoka sounds encouraged by what he’s seeing.
The Rockets coach said VanVleet has taken a noticeable step forward in the last month, with the point guard now doing more demanding work as he comes back from the torn ACL he suffered a year ago. Brian Barefield of Big Sarge Media captured Udoka’s update, and the Houston coach didn’t hide his optimism.
“ Great,” Udoka said of VanVleet’s progress (hat tip to BasketNews). “ In the last month or so, he has really ramped it up in San Diego doing his rehab. He’s doing some back-to-backs, some contact, so when you get to that point, you get a little more excited, and I’m sure he is as well.
“ Me being a guy who’s had two ACL tears, I know there are these check marks that you have to check off and you go through the process.”
VanVleet exercised his $25MM player option for 2026/27 in June, and he told Andscape in July that missing all of last season because of the injury was disappointing. He also said he believed he could be ready for Houston’s preseason opener next month.
Rockets general manager Rafael Stone also touched on another major piece of the team’s future, calling the decision to give Amen Thompson a five-year, $208MM rookie scale extension extension 10 days ago “pretty easy.” Stone spoke to Barefield and made it clear the feeling was mutual.
“ He wants to be here (and) we want to be with him,” Stone said of Thompson. “ We’re extraordinarily happy with his progress and so (we’re) happy it worked out.”
There’s also a new face on Houston’s bench, and Udoka sounded genuinely pleased about that too. Veteran assistant Chip Engelland, long respected as one of the league’s best shooting and player development coaches, is back in the building after years away.
Udoka said he’s known Engelland for 20 years, dating back to their San Antonio days, and noted that several members of Houston’s current staff came up under him. Udoka told Chancellor Johnson that “ Obviously Garrett Jackson, Ben Sullivan, Cam Hodges, all those guys came up under him,” and added, “ It’s kind of having the mentor back in the building for those guys.
They’ve done a great job with our guys, and just to have the master at what he does in the building has been good for us. He’s enthused to be back with some guys who are familiar faces, and to get to know the young guys.
I think he’ll obviously be a benefit for our guys in the shooting aspect.”
According to the team, Engelland has already started working with Thompson on his jump shot.
