Alperen Sengun Is Giving The Rockets Another Weapon Early

Rockets' star Alperen Sengun shined with a spectacular dunk against the Hawks, highlighting his pivotal role in Houston's undefeated start to the season.

Alperen Sengun gave the Rockets a jolt early in the third quarter Saturday, turning a straight-line drive into one of the game’s loudest moments in Houston’s 121-114 win over the Atlanta Hawks.

With Dyson Daniels in front of him, Sengun brought the ball up himself, attacked off the dribble and finished through traffic with a slam dunk that had the Rockets rolling. It was a clean reminder that even with the Houston offense taking on more balance, Sengun still has the ability to take over a possession on his own.

The finish fit into another strong all-around night for the Turkish big man. Sengun came in averaging 26.0 points, 8.5 rebounds and 6.0 assists over the first two games, and he continued that start against Atlanta with 17 points, nine rebounds and seven assists.

Houston’s offense kept spreading the load around, too. Fred VanVleet sat out on the second night of a back-to-back, but the rotation still found plenty of scoring punch, with seven Rockets reaching at least 11 points. Kevin Durant led the way with 22.

Sengun’s role has been eased a bit by VanVleet’s return, giving Houston more balance and taking some of the playmaking burden off his shoulders. Even so, the sequence against Daniels showed exactly why he remains such a dangerous force: he can facilitate, he can score, and when the lane opens up, he can punish a defense himself.

The Rockets and Hawks will meet again Monday in Atlanta to finish the home-and-home.

Rockets Look Built For A West Race Fans Should Watch

The Southwest Division has already started to feel like a pressure point in the West, and Houston is right in the middle of that conversation. Between the Rockets offseason changes and the wider shuffle around the division, there is a real sense that the standings could get crowded quickly, with every team trying to sort out roles, depth and identity before the race tightens.

For Houston, the intrigue is less about one headline move than the bigger picture of how the roster fits together under Ime Udoka. The Rockets spent the offseason trying to reshape themselves for a more competitive climb, and the return of key veterans only adds to the expectation that this group can hang with the leagues better teams if the pieces mesh as intended. Nobody around the team is pretending the path will be simple, but this is the kind of roster puzzle that can make the West worth following night after night. [Read more 🡒]

Rockets Frontcourt Just Got Thinner With Steven Adams Sidelined Again

Steven Adams will miss at least one more game for Houston as the veteran center continues to work through a right soleus strain, according to the teams injury report. The setback comes after Adams already sat out the season opener with calf soreness and has been eased in with limited minutes since, leaving the Rockets to keep adjusting their frontcourt rotation early in the season.

Ime Udoka is expected to offer a more detailed update before Monday nights game against the Hawks, which should give a better sense of where Adams stands in the recovery process. For a team that has been careful managing his workload, the next timeline matters, because Houston has not had many chances to build continuity with its interior depth intact. [Read more 🡒]

Reed Sheppard Just Gave The Rockets A Rotation Boost They Needed

Reed Sheppards rough night in the season opener could have easily lingered, but the rookie was right back in the mix when the Rockets needed another ballhandler. With Fred VanVleet and Marcus Smart sidelined, Houston turned to Sheppard in the starting lineup against Atlanta, and he looked far more settled as the game wore on, giving the offense a steadier rhythm while also handling a bigger workload than usual.

He answered with a sharp all-around outing and helped Houston leave with a 121-114 win, exactly the kind of rotation lift the team was hoping to find in the early going. Ime Udoka pointed to Sheppards performance and defensive activity afterward, which matters even more for a club trying to stay afloat while its veteran guards are out and its depth is being tested this early.
