Houston’s defense heads into the 2026 season with plenty of buzz, and a few names stand out as the Cougars’ best bets to break through for All-Conference recognition.
The group starts with linebacker Jaden Yates, whose track record shows why Houston is leaning on him. At Ole Miss, he posted 52 tackles and half a sack.
Then in 2024 at Marshall, he exploded for 115 tackles, including 33 solo stops. Ole Miss kept him fresh by limiting his snaps, but Houston is bringing him into a defense that badly needs an experienced voice in the middle.
Yates checks a lot of boxes for the Cougars because he can stop the run, cover in space and get after the quarterback. His speed and intelligence give him the kind of versatility that can change plays even when the stat sheet doesn’t fully capture it.
That combination puts him in position to be more than just Houston’s top linebacker - he could be one of the Big 12’s best.
In the secondary, Tulane transfer Javion White arrives with a chance to make an immediate impact. Houston lost a lot of defensive power in 2025, and White steps in as a captain for the defensive backs.
His numbers at Tulane were solid: 50 total tackles, six pass deflections and three interceptions. More than that, he brings the kind of experience that lets him handle different spots on the field and win one-on-one matchups.
If he keeps big plays in check and turns more of those chances into turnovers, quarterbacks may start avoiding his side altogether. That consistency makes him another real contender for Big 12 honors.
Kentrell Webb rounds out the group as a steady presence on the back end. He patrols the deep part of the field, but his value goes beyond that.
Webb has also helped against the run and even lined up as a sub-linebacker, giving Houston another versatile piece to work with. Just as important, he already knows Willie Fritz’s defense and brings communication skills that matter as much as production.
If Webb can generate turnovers, break up more passes and keep the secondary organized, he has a path to All-Conference recognition as well.
