Big 12 play has finally kicked in for Texas Tech, and with it comes the weekly injury report that can tell you a lot before kickoff. On Tuesday, the Red Raiders’ first update of the week landed, and it wasn’t exactly reassuring for a team heading into Friday night’s top-25 matchup with Houston.
The biggest name on the list is cornerback Amier Boyd, who is marked “Out” for the game. That’s a notable blow considering he started the first two games of the season.
Still, Boyd had already slipped behind Davin Martin on the official Texas Tech week-three depth chart, where Martin was listed as the first-team corner opposite Bryce Pollock. Whether that move was tied to the same issue or not isn’t clear from the outside.
Texas Tech also has four players tagged as “Questionable,” and the most surprising one might be wide receiver Kenny Johnson. He didn’t appear to suffer any obvious injury in the Oregon State game, but he’s now on the report anyway. Johnson leads the team with 117 receiving yards and ranks second with nine catches, so his availability matters plenty against a Houston secondary that features a pair of standout corners.
Another key offensive piece on the list is tight end Terrance Carter Jr., who is listed as questionable after missing the Oregon State game with a foot or ankle injury. He was seen in a walking boot that day, and there’s no mystery about how important he is to this offense. Carter is the biggest matchup problem Texas Tech has.
On the defensive side, safety Brenden Jordan is also questionable. He is expected back after serving a team-imposed two-game suspension to start the year, so his spot on the report could reflect injury concerns or simply his return to game condition.
Transfer edge rusher Trey White rounds out the questionable group. He has not yet played this season after arriving in Lubbock from San Diego State in the offseason.
A knee injury from fall camp kept him out of the first two games, but Texas Tech could use him now after a pass rush that struggled against Oregon State. Joey McGuire said earlier this week that White, who has 19.5 career sacks at the college level, is a game-time decision.
There’s always some gamesmanship built into injury reports, and teams handle those designations differently. Texas Tech has been relatively transparent since the policy went into effect, though the exact meaning of “Doubtful” and “Questionable” can still vary from one program to another.
Last season, most of the players the Red Raiders listed as “Questionable” ended up playing that week. Texas Tech will be hoping for a repeat on Friday night, because this is the kind of conference test where depth gets exposed fast.

Hawthorne picked Houston over Ole Miss, Mississippi State and Harvard, and he joins a class that already includes three other four-star prospects. For a program that keeps leaning into length, toughness and positional versatility, it is another encouraging sign that the Cougars are selling the kind of frontcourt fit that tends to translate well once players arrive on campus. Texas Tech Could Force Houston To Prepare For A Very Different Offense
Texas Tech is shaping up as a little more than a standard scouting assignment for Houston this week. The Red Raiders plan to have Florida State transfer Thomas Castellanos available at quarterback alongside starter Will Hammond, giving them a different kind of wrinkle to sort through as they get ready for a matchup that could ask the Cougars to prepare for more than one look under center.
Hammond is still expected to handle most of the snaps, but the possibility of a two-quarterback setup changes the picture enough to matter. Castellanos brings a well-traveled rsum, with stops at UCF, Boston College and Florida State, and his addition came after Brendan Sorsbys departure left Texas Tech looking for depth.
