The Illinois Fighting Illini have made quite the statement in the South Region, wrapping up their Greenville, South Carolina journey with a commanding 76-55 victory over the No. 11-seeded VCU Rams. As the No. 3 seed, Illinois is proving to be a formidable force in the tournament.
The Big Ten is holding strong, with seven teams, including Illinois, still in the hunt for a Final Four spot as we head into Sunday's NCAA Tournament matchups.
Illinois’ win was fueled by a dynamic offensive performance, especially in the second half, where four players hit double digits in scoring. Andrej Stojakovic led the charge with 21 points, boosting the team's confidence and offensive rhythm.
Coach Brad Underwood couldn't be more pleased with the team’s transformation since the conference tournament wrapped up. “It is a well-rounded group, and I have known that," Underwood shared with reporters. "It is just nice to start seeing it."
Stojakovic has become a pivotal player, stepping up when it counts. Underwood praised him, saying, “Drej Andrej [Stojakovic] has just found a niche.
I am so comfortable with him knowing we have got one of our best offensive players coming in off the bench. He proved again tonight defensively, he is good on that end as well.”
Looking ahead, Illinois is gearing up for a Sweet 16 showdown with the Houston Cougars this Thursday. The Cougars, who recently defeated No. 10-seed Texas A&M with an 88-57 win, are no strangers to the Illini, having knocked them out in the 2022 Round of 32.
Coach Underwood, celebrating his 300th career win, knows the challenge that lies ahead. The Illini will need to bring their A-game to quiet the Houston crowd and advance further. "We'll take it one game at a time," Underwood remarked.
If Illinois (26-8) can upset the No. 2-seeded Cougars (30-6), they will make their first Elite Eight appearance since 2024, when they fell to the eventual champions, the UConn Huskies.
The clock is ticking, and soon we'll see if Illinois’ offensive prowess can carry them through. The journey continues, and it's shaping up to be an exciting ride.
