Houston’s 2027 recruiting class is already sitting at the top of the national board, and the latest piece came Monday when four-star power forward/center Derek Daniels committed to the Cougars.
Daniels, who is also known as Beau Daniels, gave Houston another major addition after taking his official visit on Sept. 4.
Joe Tipton of On3 first reported the commitment. At 6-foot-7 and 230 pounds, Daniels is ranked as the No. 9 center in the country by 247Sports Composite and the No. 8 player at his position on On3, where he is listed as a power forward.
That makes him Houston’s third four-star commit in the class, and all three are top-65 players nationally according to 247Sports Composite. The Cougars have put together that group quickly, and Daniels’ pledge only strengthens a class that now ranks No. 1 overall in the country per 247Sports, just ahead of Iowa State and Purdue.
Houston’s haul also shows the range of talent Kelvin Sampson and his staff are landing. Point guard Darrell Davis is ranked the No. 6 floor general in the country by 247Sports, while combo guard Oneal Delancy is also 10th overall. With Daniels in the mix, the Cougars now have two guards and a PF/C in the class.
Daniels’ path has already crossed with some familiar faces in the program. He attended Iowa United Prep, the same school as freshman Arafan Diane, and also spent time at Montverde Academy in Florida, where Delancy was as well. The two former teammates are back together on the same roster.
On paper, Daniels brings a profile Houston has liked in its bigs. He is viewed as a strong, physical defender with the kind of wingspan and athleticism that fit the program’s recent frontcourt mold. His wingspan is listed at 7-foot-2, and while his offense still needs development, his ability in the paint and his defensive upside make him a strong match for the Cougars.
Daniels drew offers from Auburn, Ohio State, Maryland, Oklahoma State and West Virginia, among others. Houston was the last school to offer him, doing so on July 23, and the Cougars closed the deal after another successful Labor Day visit.
The commitment adds another layer to a recruiting run that has kept Houston among the nation’s elite on that front. The Cougars’ recent success has already produced major results, including Kingston Flemings and Chris Cenac Jr. becoming first-round picks in the 2026 NBA Draft after Houston landed three five-star prospects in 2025. Cenac also gave Houston the No. 1 overall center in back-to-back recruiting cycles, followed by Diane in the class of 2026.
Daniels’ addition keeps that momentum rolling. The Cougars now have a class built around high-end guards and a promising frontcourt piece, and the early returns have Houston sitting alone at No. 1.
