Houston Advances to Big 12 Semifinals with Gritty Win Over BYU
In a thrilling showdown at the T-Mobile Center, the #5 University of Houston Men's Basketball team secured their spot in the Phillips 66 Big 12 Semifinals, edging out 10th-seeded BYU with a 73-66 victory. This win marks another milestone for Houston, who continue to demonstrate their prowess on the court.
The first half was a rollercoaster of momentum shifts. Houston (27-5) initially built a 9-point lead, showcasing their offensive capabilities.
However, BYU (23-11) wasn't backing down. Aleksej Kostic was pivotal for BYU, sinking back-to-back 3-pointers to fuel an 8-0 run, pushing BYU ahead by seven with just over two minutes left in the half.
Yet, Houston's resilience shone through as graduate center Kalifa Sakho grabbed a crucial rebound and converted an and-one play with mere seconds remaining, trimming the deficit to 41-37 at halftime.
The second half mirrored the first, with neither team able to maintain a significant lead. The tide turned when redshirt freshman guard Chase McCarty found himself wide open, nailing a 3-pointer that gave Houston a six-point cushion.
BYU's Kostic responded with another 3-pointer, but Houston's freshman guard Kingston Flemings answered back with his own trey. Senior guard Emanuel Sharp was flawless from the free-throw line, hitting four crucial shots to push Houston's lead to double digits, effectively sealing the victory.
This triumph propels the Cougars into the Big 12 Tournament semifinals for the third consecutive season, marking their eighth straight year advancing in any conference tournament. Flemings led the charge with 17 points, while Sharp added 13, going a perfect 10-for-10 from the line. Tugler contributed 12 points and eight rebounds, and freshman center Chris Cenac chipped in with 10 points and seven boards.
For BYU, AJ Dybantsa was a standout performer, scoring 26 points, grabbing five rebounds, and dishing out two assists. Guard Robert Wright III added 15 points and led the game with five assists.
