Houston is about to find out exactly how sturdy its offensive line really is.
Utah brings one of the best defenses in the Big 12 into this matchup, and on paper the Utes look built to make life miserable. They’re allowing 14.7 points per game, good for 11th in the FBS, and they rank 12th in rushing defense at 88.7 yards allowed per game. That kind of profile forces an offense to earn every inch.
Houston, though, has reason to believe it can answer the challenge. The Cougars are averaging 220.3 rushing yards per game, which ranks 16th nationally, thanks in part to the running tandem of Makhi Hughes and Re’Shaun Sanford II.
Their line has already earned recognition too, landing on the Joe Moore Award Midseason Honor Roll. According to Houston Athletics, the Cougars have given up the second-fewest tackles for loss in the country and carry an offensive grade of 84, which ranks third nationally.
The individual talent up front has shown up as well. Anthony Boswell, Alvin Ebosele, Shadre Hurst, and McKenzie Agnello are all inside the top 10 among the highest-graded linemen in the conference.
Still, Utah is a different kind of test. The Utes play disciplined football and force offenses to work patiently down the field. They don’t hand out easy yards, and this matchup feels like a straight-up collision between Houston’s offensive front and Utah’s defensive line.
There is some proof Utah can be pushed around. On Oct. 10 against Kansas, quarterback Isaiah Marshall threw for 333 yards and had plenty of time in the pocket. Last week against Colorado, the Buffaloes put up 17 points in the third quarter and ran for 138 yards before Utah still pulled out a 27-24 win.
Houston doesn’t necessarily need another 220-yard rushing day to make this work. What it needs is enough stability up front to let Conner Weigman operate. He threw for 343 yards and five touchdowns against Oklahoma State, and if he can do anything close to that against the Utes, Houston will have a real chance to keep moving toward the Big 12 Championship Game.
Red-zone execution could tilt it, too. ESPN lists Houston as scoring on 84.6% of its trips inside the 20, which ranks 75th nationally, while Utah’s red-zone defense sits 15th at 71.4%. Against a defense that allows fewer than 15 points per game, settling for field goals instead of touchdowns could be the difference.
In the end, this game likely comes down to one thing: whether Houston’s offensive line can hold up. If it can keep Weigman upright and create enough room for the run game, the Cougars have a shot. If Utah takes over at the line of scrimmage, Houston’s path to a win gets a lot narrower.

Houston Faces Its Biggest Chance Yet To Prove It Belongs
No. 14 Houston is heading into one of the seasons biggest stages with a chance to make a national statement, and it already has at least one prominent believer. ESPN College GameDay host Rece Davis backed the Cougars to beat No. 10 Utah in their upcoming Big 12 matchup, setting up a top-15 showdown at Rice-Eccles Stadium with real league and playoff-adjacent implications hanging over it.
Houston has leaned on quarterback Conner Weigman throughout the year, and Davis singled out the way the offense has operated under him as a key reason the Cougars can handle the trip. The challenge now is doing it against a Utah team that has not lost yet, in a building where the pressure will only grow as the night goes on. [Read more 🡒]
Houston Defense Faces Its Toughest Test Yet At Utah
No. 14 Houston is heading into its biggest defensive challenge of the season with a trip to face No. 10 Utah, a matchup that will ask a lot more than just standard pass coverage. The Cougars have been good enough to earn their ranking, but the Utes bring a different kind of stress test, one built around senior quarterback Devon Dampier and an offense that can make defenses defend the whole field.
Willie Fritz pointed to Utahs versatility and Dampiers ability to hurt opponents with both his arm and legs, which means Houston will have to stay disciplined snap after snap. The Cougars also have to be ready for Utah to lean on its ground game in creative ways, forcing Houstons defenders to sort out assignments quickly and avoid losing contain in a game where one busted look can turn into a long night. BYU Just Added A New Threat To Its Big 12 Push
The Big 12 has reached the midpoint of its season with three teams still unbeaten in league play, and the race at the top is beginning to separate into tiers. BYU has strengthened its position with a win over Notre Dame despite dealing with injuries, while Texas Tech has flashed real offensive growth and a few other contenders have started to reveal flaws through uneven recent results.
For Houston, the latest checkpoint was encouraging in its own right, especially with Conner Weigman turning in a strong passing performance in a tight road environment. The Cougars have reasons to feel better about the trajectory of their offense after that showing, even as the bigger picture in the conference keeps shifting around them and the next stretch will say a lot about whether they can stay in the conversation.
