Houston's Home Edge Just Raised The Stakes For November

With their flawless home record and a strong performance from quarterback Conner Weigman, the Houston Cougars are poised for a pivotal November run toward the conference championship.

Houston has already done the hard part at TDECU Stadium: it has protected home field every time out.

The No. 18 Cougars are 4-0 at home, and that spotless mark has put them in position to make November matter.

Their biggest statement on their own turf came in the 35-32 win over then-No. 18 Oklahoma State, a result that stands out even in a home slate that has forced Houston to win in different ways.

The Cougars did not just cruise through those games. Outside of the 77-6 blowout of Southern in Week 2, the rest of the home schedule has asked Houston to answer pressure.

Against Oregon State, the Cougars held on for a 33-20 victory behind Conner Weigman’s 305 passing yards and Amare Thomas’ eight catches for 133 yards. Against UCF, Houston had to dig out of a 17-point hole before Weigman’s three rushing touchdowns helped flip the game.

Then came the back-and-forth battle with Oklahoma State, where Weigman threw five touchdown passes to keep Houston unbeaten at home.

That home success matters even more because the road results have been split. Houston is 2-2 away from TDECU Stadium, with losses to Texas Tech and Utah.

Still, the offense has traveled well. In the four road games, Weigman has thrown 11 touchdown passes, so the home record is not about the Cougars needing a boost to score.

It’s about what a perfect home run can do for the team’s baseline.

November lays out that path clearly. Houston opens the month at home against Cincinnati on Nov.

  1. The Bearcats are 5-2 overall, but they are winless on the road, even after handing Texas Tech its first loss of the season in a 37-24 result.

From there, the Cougars head to Colorado on Nov. 13 and then to West Virginia on Nov. 21.

If Houston wins both of those road games, it reaches nine wins before the regular-season finale.

That final game comes back at home against Baylor on Nov. 28.

Take care of the two home games in November, and Houston’s floor rises to eight wins. Run the table, and the Cougars get to 10.

That’s where this season starts to separate itself from last year. Houston is not just chasing more wins.

It has a real path to a College Football Playoff spot, and a 10-2 finish could put the Cougars in the conversation for the championship game. That would still depend on Houston staying unbeaten in November and getting help from teams ahead of it in the Big 12 standings.

For now, though, the formula is simple. Houston has already proven it can defend its home turf. November gives the Cougars a chance to turn that into something bigger and finish the regular season on their own terms.
