Houston Just Sent A Bigger Big 12 Message Than Fans Expected

After a decisive victory over Kansas State, the Houston Cougars climb in the rankings, setting the stage for crucial upcoming battles in their quest for a Big 12 title and playoff spot.

Houston did more than just survive a tricky trip to Manhattan, Kansas. The Cougars walked in as 2.5-point underdogs and walked out with a 35-16 win over Kansas State, a result that nudged them up two spots in the AP Top 25.

The ranking bump comes after Houston handled business in convincing fashion, jumping out to a 21-3 lead before halftime and never letting the Wildcats find a real rhythm. Kansas State did score twice in the second half, but the Cougars had enough on offense to keep the game firmly under control.

Patrick Overmyer was the headline-maker on the receiving end, hauling in four touchdown passes. That matched the most by a tight end since Isaiah Likely also caught four touchdowns in 2021 with the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers. Houston’s offense piled up 475 yards overall, with quarterback Conner Weigman and the running back room helping power the performance.

The challenge looked real on paper. Kansas State brought the nation’s best secondary into the matchup, and Houston had some questions hanging over it after last week’s fight with UCF.

Against the Knights, the Cougars had to storm back from a 17-0 third-quarter deficit before escaping with a 27-17 win. That kind of comeback can leave some doubt, and it likely played into why Kansas State was favored here.

Instead, Houston answered in a big way. Weigman stayed composed, the offense kept landing punches, and the Cougars’ defense largely bottled up the Wildcat attack. The result was the kind of road win that can change how a team is viewed, even if the rankings only move a little.

Now comes the real pressure point. Houston is 5-1 and heads into a home matchup with No.

18 Oklahoma State, a 4-1 team that has won four straight since opening with a 24-10 loss to Tulsa. The Cowboys have been rolling ever since, including a 39-31 upset of No.

6 Oregon in Week 2, and quarterback Drew Mestemaker leads an offense that will test Houston’s secondary.

The schedule does not ease up from there. On Oct. 24, the Cougars have to deal with No.

11 Utah, which remains unbeaten despite a recent scare against Kansas. After those two games, Houston gets a bye.

That makes the next stretch a major one for the Cougars’ 2026 goals. One loss, and the Big 12 picture gets a lot murkier. Two losses, and the College Football Playoff conversation is over.

For now, though, the message from Saturday is clear: Houston is for real enough to beat a strong Kansas State team on the road, and enough to force the rest of the country to keep paying attention. The AP voters moved them only slightly. The Cougars now have a chance to move themselves much higher.
