Houston Just Made The Kind Of Big 12 Statement Fans Craved

In a thrilling encounter, Houston edged Oklahoma State to secure a pivotal win and climb the rankings.

Houston didn’t just beat No. 18 Oklahoma State.

It survived a shootout, answered every push, and walked out of TDECU with a 35-32 win that sent the No. 20 Cougars climbing to No. 14 in the AP poll.

The Cowboys, meanwhile, left with their first conference loss after Houston controlled enough of the game on defense and kept finding answers on offense. It was the 23rd meeting between the programs, and Houston now holds a 12-win edge all-time.

Houston’s first possession went sideways in a hurry with an interception, and Oklahoma State turned that into an early field goal. That kind of start can tilt a game fast, but Willie Fritz’s team steadied itself. Fifth-year quarterback Conner Weigman led the next drive to a touchdown, putting Houston on the board and giving the Cougars a chance to settle in.

“There’s a couple of plays we’d like to have back,” Fritz said when talking about their strategy after the game. “I thought Austin Armstrong and the defense did a really good job staying over the top.”

By halftime, Houston had built a 14-3 lead, and the Cougars looked like a team that had already taken the first punch and was now forcing the pace. Oklahoma State opened the third quarter with another field goal to close the gap, but Houston answered with a touchdown of its own. The Cowboys weren’t done, though, as sophomore quarterback Drew Mestemaker responded with a touchdown to keep them hanging around.

Houston carried a 28-17 lead into the fourth quarter, and the game still had plenty of edge left. Oklahoma State made its move with a touchdown and a two-point conversion, trimming the margin and putting pressure back on the Cougars. But Weigman and the offense answered again with another scoring drive, and Houston held on from there.

“We knew they had a great offense,” Weigman said when asked how he was feeling throughout the fourth quarter. “To be able to go out there and execute the way we did it was big time.”

The Cougars finished the job in victory formation, sealing a three-point win and closing the door on Oklahoma State’s comeback bid.

“The best play in football is the victory formation,” Weigman said when asked how it felt to end the game on offense. “To be able to go out there and end in that formation and get the job done like that, it was huge.”

The atmosphere matched the occasion. A crowd of 42,544 showed up for the game, the fourth-highest attendance mark in TDECU history. Fritz said the size and feel of the crowd stood out.

“I did kind of looked around a bit and saw it and that’s what we’ve been hoping for,” Fritz said. “I think Oklahoma State might’ve had three or four thousand people come but 90 percent of the crowd was Houston people, which is outstanding.”

Houston now turns to week eight and a trip to Salt Lake City to face Utah in another high-ranking matchup.
