Houston football is closing in on its season opener against Oregon State on Sept. 5 at 11 a.m. inside TDECU Stadium, and even with a strong transfer portal haul, one freshman stands out as the most likely to make noise right away in 2026: athlete Paris Melvin Jr.
That may sound like a surprise at first, especially with Houston’s highest-rated recruit, Keisean Henderson, in the class. Henderson is the No. 1 high school quarterback in the nation, but Willie Fritz has already made it clear that Conner Weigman will be the starting quarterback in 2026. That leaves Melvin Jr. with a much cleaner path to the field.
And he brings the kind of versatility coaches love to mess with immediately.
Melvin Jr. arrived in Houston as a 4-star prospect from Cypress, Texas, and was ranked as the No. 6 athlete in the country. At Cy Springs High School, he earned All-District 16-6A Utility Player of the Year honors because he could do a little bit of everything.
Over four seasons, he rushed for 1,927 yards and 28 touchdowns, added 61 catches for more than 1,000 yards, and chipped in 82 tackles with two interceptions on defense. He also made the 2025 All-District First Team as a kick/punt returner.
That kind of resume is exactly why Houston has been moving him around already. He opened spring work getting most of his reps at running back or as a returner, but over the summer he’s found more of a role on defense.
Houston’s approach under Fritz has been pretty clear: recruit locally, develop high school talent, and keep attacking the transfer portal. The Cougars’ 2025 success was fueled by portal additions like Weigman, Tanner Koziol, Amare Thomas and Dean Connors, but the staff has also put major emphasis on building through the prep ranks. That showed up in Houston’s highest-rated recruiting class ever for 2026, a group made up mostly of local talent.
Still, among the freshmen, Melvin Jr. looks like the one with the best shot to matter fastest. His ability to line up at running back, wide receiver, on defense, or as a punt and kick returner gives him more ways onto the field than most of the other newcomers.
