Houston’s 2026 freshman class gave Willie Fritz something this program has needed for a while: blue-chip talent with real paths to the field.
The headliner is obvious. Keisean Henderson, the five-star quarterback and the No. 1 recruit in the country overall, is the crown jewel of the group. But with senior Conner Weigman locked in as the starter, Henderson’s role figures to be more of a package situation if he gets on the field at all, with a chance to come in and run a couple of plays.
That leaves the rest of Houston’s top newcomers, and the freshman most likely to push for immediate snaps - and maybe even a starting job - is Paris Melvin Jr.
Melvin Jr. might be the most fascinating player in the class. He’s been compared to former Colorado star Travis Hunter, and for good reason: Houston is treating him like a true three-way weapon.
During spring football, he worked in the secondary and made plays there, while also handling kick return duties on special teams. At 5-11, 185 pounds, he brings the kind of open-field burst that can change a game fast.
His role is still being sorted out, but that versatility is exactly why he looks closest to starting. He already stood out in the secondary, and the Cy-Springs High School product has proven he can impact games at wide receiver and running back, too. The No. 5 athlete in the country according to 247 Sports ran for almost 2,000 yards and 28 touchdowns across his four-year varsity career, and added over 1000 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns on 61 receptions.
The numbers back up the eye test, and so does the track record. Melvin Jr. has the kind of quickness that shows up immediately, and Houston may need to find more ways to get him the ball at receiver, especially with senior Makhi Hughes and junior DJ Butler in the running back room.
That depth at running back also makes the rest of the picture clearer. John Hebert is expected to begin the season fourth on the depth chart at running back, while Jeremiah Bushnell’s impact will be something to watch once fall camp opens.
Houston’s freshman class was ranked No. 43 nationally and No. 6 in the Big 12 by 247 Sports, and the group’s best chance to make an instant imprint seems to be Melvin Jr. - a player too dynamic to keep off the field for long.

Landen Williams-Callis, a five-star running back recruit, is still weighing his options with a decision expected on Aug. 1, and the Cougars are in the mix with in-state competition from programs such as Texas A&M and SMU. For a Houston program trying to keep pace in a crowded recruiting race, landing a player of that caliber would say plenty about where the staff believes it can go next.
There is also a practical football angle here beyond the star rating.
