No. 20 Houston gets a fresh Big 12 test Saturday morning, and the Cougars are trying to answer a simple question after their conference opener: can they clean things up and keep building?
UCF comes to TDECU Stadium at 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the Big 12, while Houston sits at 3-1 and 0-1 in league play. Kickoff is set for Saturday, Oct. 3 at 11 a.m.
CT, with ESPN2 carrying the game. Anish Shroff will handle play-by-play, Andre Ware will be on the analyst desk, and Morgan Uber will work the sideline.
On the radio side, the game will air on KPRC 950 AM, The Varsity Network, SiriusXM 138 or 199, and the SiriusXM app, with Kevin Eschenfelder, Ted Pardee and Jeremy Branham on the call.
Houston is also rolling out its blue alternate uniform again, another sign that the Cougars are looking to make some noise in 2026. A convincing win would go a long way toward backing that up.
Willie Fritz’s team has been one of the more interesting stories in the league. In his third season at Houston, Fritz is 16-12 with the Cougars and 263-132-1 overall across 34 years of coaching. Hired from Tulane in December 2023, he has pushed Houston into the conversation as a legitimate Big 12 contender.
Last season, Houston went 10-3 and finished with a Texas Bowl win over LSU for its first double-digit win season since 2021. The Cougars also beat UCF 30-27 in 2025, though history between these teams still leans the other way: Houston is 4-8 all-time against the Knights.
UCF is led by Scott Frost, now in his second year with the program in his second stint there. Frost first became a national name after going 13-0 in 2017, then returned to Nebraska, where his run ended with a 16-31 record and a 10-26 mark in Big Ten play before he was fired. Back with the Knights, he went 5-7 last season, and UCF has opened 2026 at 3-1.
Houston enters the game in good shape on the injury front. The Cougars have two players out - kicker Evan Noel and linebacker Evan Castile - and both are near the bottom of the depth chart. Outside of that, Houston has stayed remarkably healthy.
On the field, the matchup points toward UCF trying to find balance. The Knights have the worst passing offense in the Big 12 and the second-worst passing offense in the Power Four, but Houston’s secondary has been vulnerable enough that UCF may want to take some chances through the air anyway. The Knights have also gotten solid production on the ground.
One of the biggest numbers to watch is turnover margin. UCF has forced nine turnovers, which has helped cover for a defense that has not been statistically dominant. If Conner Weigman and Houston keep taking care of the ball, that could tilt the game in the Cougars’ favor.
For Houston, this is more than just another conference game. The Cougars have looked sharp, but they still haven’t beaten a Power Four opponent. Saturday offers a real chance to show where they stand against a team that can at least test them.

Houston Wants Fans To Turn This Home Game Into A Real Edge
An early kickoff at TDECU Stadium gives Houston a chance to set the tone from the opening whistle when UCF visits Saturday for the Cougars inaugural Built By Houston game. The program is leaning into the event with a push for fans to make the morning feel like more than just another home date, and the setup includes a slate of gameday extras meant to get people in the building and moving around before kickoff.
Fans can handle tickets and parking through the official mobile app, with pre-purchased parking available at discounted rates, and the stadium footprint will offer plenty to do once they arrive. Cougar Alley, the Bud Light Backyard, NASA exhibits and multiple team stores are all part of the presentation, giving Houston a chance to turn an 11 a.m. start into a fuller home-field atmosphere than the time slot might usually suggest. Houston Defense Keeps Flashing Promise But Fans See One Frustrating Problem
Houstons defense has started to show the kind of activity that can change a game, with multiple quarterback pressures and sacks popping up in recent outings. The flashes are there on film, and they match the sense around the program that this group is getting closer to turning disruptive moments into something more sustained.
Will James has kept the tone upbeat, pointing to the possibility of a defensive breakthrough even as the unit has left some plays on the field. For Houston, the frustrating part is not the effort or the pressure itself, but the way those chances have not always finished the job, leaving a clear next step as the season moves along. West Virginia Defense Faces Immediate Pressure After Last Weeks Collapse
Week 5 of Big 12 play arrives with a few teams under the microscope, but West Virginias defense is carrying the heaviest burden after last weeks collapse. Houstons own path is more straightforward, with a home date against UCF and the chance to handle one of the expected wins on its schedule while the rest of the conference sorts out bigger questions.
Around the league, Arizona has to deal with Cincinnatis run game, Arizona State is looking for more consistency against Baylors defense, and Kansas is the lone Big 12 team stepping outside conference play. For Houston, the immediate stakes are less about style points than staying steady in a week when several league rivals are trying to patch holes before the schedule tightens further. [Read more 🡒]
