No. 17 Houston is back from the bye week with plenty on the line Saturday afternoon, and the Cougars get their homecoming stage against Cincinnati with a chance to keep their Big 12 hopes alive.
At 6-2 overall and 3-2 in conference play, Houston needs to finish strong if it wants any shot at the Big 12 Championship. The timing matters, too, after the Cougars were hit hard in their Week 8 loss at Utah. Now they get a shot at a familiar opponent they have not been able to solve in a while.
Cincinnati arrives at 5-3 and 2-3 in the Big 12, and the Bearcats have had Houston’s number in recent meetings. The Cougars have dropped the last five matchups, and they have not beaten Cincinnati since 2016. The last home win in the series came in 2015, and the most recent meeting ended in a 34-0 Cincinnati win in 2024.
There is also a ranking wrinkle here: the last two times Houston beat Cincinnati, the Cougars were ranked. They are ranked again now, sitting at No. 17, and they’ll try to turn that into a breakthrough against a team that has been a problem for years.
Houston’s offense should have a chance to make noise coming out of the bye. The Cougars are healthy, and that matters against a Cincinnati defense that ranks 15th in total defense in the conference.
The ground game will be a key part of the plan, with senior Makhi Hughes and redshirt junior Re’Shaun Sanford II expected to be central pieces. On the other side, Houston’s run defense will be tested by Cincinnati junior running back Cole Tabb.
