MLB Network analyst Mark DeRosa took a swing at a Houston Astros rebuild idea, and baseball fans wasted no time letting him hear it.
The timing alone made the whole thing feel off. Houston has been one of the hottest teams in baseball over the past several weeks and sits just one game out of a playoff spot, yet DeRosa floated a plan to tear down the roster and start over. That’s a hard sell for any club, but especially for one still squarely in the postseason race.
On MLB Network’s X account, DeRosa laid out a trio of hypothetical blockbuster trades he believed Houston should explore. His proposal sent Yordan Alvarez and Yainer Diaz to the New York Yankees for George Lombard Jr.
(No. 20 overall), Will Warren and additional pieces. He also had Hunter Brown going to the Atlanta Braves for Cam Caminiti (No. 41 overall) and more.
The third deal moved Jeremy Peña to the Boston Red Sox for Roman Anthony.
Each return included promising young talent, but the bigger issue was the premise itself. Trading away a franchise-caliber bat, an emerging ace and a star shortstop would amount to a full reset, and that’s not exactly the kind of move teams make when they’re still chasing a playoff berth.
That disconnect is what set off the backlash. Fans on X didn’t just disagree with the individual trade packages - plenty of them flat-out rejected the idea that Houston should be thinking about selling at all.
One response asked, “Is this dude dumber than dirt?” Another pointed out, “mark derosa think a team that’s .5 games out of the division and can still get in as a Wild card should sell their 3 stars”
The reaction was loud and immediate, and it made the same point over and over: if the Astros are this close to October, why would they be shopping the core instead of adding to it?
With the trade deadline approaching, Houston looks much more like a team trying to strengthen its position than one preparing for a teardown. DeRosa’s blueprint may have been creative, but the fan response made clear it didn’t land.
