Hunter Brown gave the Astros exactly what they needed Friday night: length, command and a lineup that finally backed him up at the right moment.
Brown punched out 10 Mets over 6 2/3 innings and gave up just one run as Houston beat New York 3-1 at Citi Field. The right-hander allowed five hits and one walk, then watched Daulton Varsho break things open with a two-run single in the sixth inning after the bases were loaded.
That hit put Houston in front for good.
The Astros improved to 3-1 on their trip through New York and moved to 68-67, with two games still left against the Mets. Brown’s outing was especially important because it snapped a run of short starts for Houston. He became the first Astros starter to get through six innings since Hayden Wesneski on Aug. 10, ending a stretch of 14 games between quality starts.
For Brown, it was also a long-awaited win. He improved to 4-3 and picked up his first victory since July 31.
The strikeout total stood out, too: it was only the third time in his career he reached double digits in that category. His previous 10-strikeout game came on May 26, 2023, against the Athletics, and his career high is 12, set June 14, 2025, against Minnesota.
The biggest shift Friday was Brown’s control. He entered the game with a 13.7 walk rate, the highest in the majors among pitchers with at least 70 innings, but he kept the Mets from living on free passes and turned in the kind of outing Houston has been searching for.
