The Yankees may be staring at a familiar offseason headache: another team wants one of their coaches.
Brad Ausmus, New York’s bench coach, is interviewing for the Houston Astros’ managerial opening, according to Jon Heyman. Brian McTaggart reported that Ausmus was in Houston on Thursday, a day before Randy Flores was announced as the Astros’ new general manager.
Ausmus has been on Aaron Boone’s staff for the past three seasons, and his résumé makes him a natural fit for a club looking for a manager. He has already done the job in the majors, leading the Detroit Tigers from 2014-17 and the Los Angeles Angels in 2019. Across those stops, he put together a 386-422 record.
Houston is looking for a new manager after Joe Espada’s contract was not renewed following three seasons. Ausmus also brings a built-in connection to the Astros, where he spent 10 of his 18 MLB seasons as a player.
This is not the first time Houston has had him on its radar. Ausmus interviewed for the Astros’ managerial opening in 2020 before the team hired Dusty Baker. He was also a finalist for the Astros’ general manager job before Dana Brown was hired ahead of the 2023 season.
That kind of familiarity could matter as Flores takes on his first major hiring decision with the organization.
For the Yankees, the possibility of losing Ausmus adds another item to the offseason to-do list. He has been a key part of Boone’s staff since arriving before the 2024 season, helping with preparation and in-game decisions. His background as both a former catcher and a former manager gives him a perspective the Yankees have leaned on.
New York also has other coaches whose contracts are up, so Ausmus is not the only name the club has to sort through. Still, a bench coach leaving for a managerial job would be a meaningful change for Boone and the Yankees.
Houston has several candidates in the mix, but Ausmus’ history with the franchise and his experience in the dugout make him a prominent one as Flores begins shaping the next Astros staff.

Astros Just Kept A Crowded Infield Question Alive
The Astros have kept one of their most important infield pieces in place by exercising Isaac Paredes club option for the 2027 season. It is a straightforward move on paper, but it matters for a roster that has had to keep sorting through a crowded infield picture while trying to preserve as much lineup stability as possible.
Paredes gave Houston plenty of reason to want him back after a productive 2026 season, when his offense and improved plate discipline stood out. The contract wrinkle now adds a little more intrigue to his future, since the deal can shift again depending on where he lands in American League MVP voting, leaving the Astros with one more layer to monitor as they map out the next phase of their infield. Yordan Alvarez Put Astros Fans On Edge With MVP Race Twist
Yordan Alvarez put together the kind of season that made him impossible to ignore, giving Astros fans plenty to celebrate long after the regular season ended. He won the American League batting title, cleared 40 home runs and spent the year near the top of the league in offensive production, while also drawing a club-record number of intentional walks as opponents tried to work around him.
The bigger question now is how that dominance translates when the MVP vote is finally revealed. Alvarez has already picked up support from former MVP Jose Altuve, and his advanced numbers only strengthen the case, with his bat sitting in the 99th percentile for key metrics. For Houston, the suspense is less about whether he belonged in the conversation and more about whether the race breaks his way at the end. [Read more 🡒]
Astros Manager Search Just Took A Surprising Cardinals Turn
The Astros managerial search has taken on a familiar Cardinals flavor after the club hired Randy Flores as its new general manager. With Joe Espada gone, Houston is casting a wide net for its next skipper, and Flores ties to St. Louis have naturally pushed Albert Pujols into the conversation as a possible name to watch. It is an easy connection to make, given Pujols profile, his baseball pedigree and the way front-office relationships can shape these searches.
Pujols is not the only former Cardinal being floated, either, with Yadier Molina also mentioned as a possible candidate as Houston sorts through options. For now, though, the speculation is doing most of the work, and the real intrigue is whether Flores arrival changes the direction of the search or simply adds another layer to it as the Astros look for their next manager.
