Astros' Tatsuya Imai Faces Major Hurdle in MLB Transition

Amidst nerves and celebrations, Tatsuya Imai shines in his first Astros camp appearance while Isaac Paredes finds his rhythm despite trade talks.

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Navigating New Beginnings with the Astros

Tatsuya Imai’s journey into Major League Baseball took a significant step forward on Friday, as he faced live batting practice for the first time in spring training with the Houston Astros. The nerves were palpable for Imai, especially when he found himself up against none other than Jose Altuve.

"Facing Jose, it hit me - I’m really in the big leagues," Imai shared through an interpreter. Altuve missed the first pitch and grounded the second, bringing a smile to Imai’s face. Relief might not have been on his lips, but those around him felt it.

Pitching coach Josh Miller noted, "He’s been observing live throws, and it seemed to ease him. He looked at home on the mound."

Imai faced five hitters, including Altuve and Carlos Correa, with a crowd of Astros personnel, including GM Dana Brown, watching closely. While results in these sessions aren't the focus, Imai's fastball, clocking in the low to mid-90s, and his distinctive slider drew attention. Correa was particularly impressed by Imai’s split, saying, "It blends with the fastball and just drops when you need to decide."

Miller mentioned that Imai’s "goals meeting" with the team is on the horizon, but he doesn’t foresee any major changes. "He’s easygoing and fits right in," Miller added.

Imai is settling into the Astros' culture seamlessly, with Correa even giving him a hug post-session. Inside the clubhouse, teammates welcomed him warmly.

Celebrating Traditions and Navigating Changes

The Astros’ clubhouse was alive with tradition on Wednesday as a mariachi band celebrated Isaac Paredes’ 27th birthday. Paredes, a reserved figure in a lively team, was serenaded just like last year, though his role within the team remains uncertain amidst trade talks.

Manager Joe Espada, continuing the birthday tradition, aimed to bring normalcy to a potentially awkward situation. Despite trade rumors, Paredes has maintained his composure, focusing on his game and taking his spot at second base during drills.

Espada and Paredes have kept a close dialogue, though details remain private. For now, Paredes backs up Altuve, with his future still a topic of spring speculation.

A New Voice in Astros' Training

Mike Jasperson, the new head strength and conditioning coach, brings a fresh perspective to the Astros. Previously with the Rockies, Jasperson replaces Hazael Wessin, who moved to the Cubs for a role closer to home.

The Astros have made several adjustments following an injury-plagued 2025 season. Eric Velazquez steps in as head athletic trainer, and the team is tweaking its approach to player maintenance.

Espada emphasized the importance of rest and managing workload, especially for an aging roster. "We’re focusing on ensuring our trainers are proactive and using technology to monitor player health," Espada explained.

The Astros are fine-tuning their spring training schedule, aiming to balance preparation with recovery. It’s all about getting the team ready for a demanding season ahead, with a keen eye on keeping everyone in peak condition.
