The Astros had a rough enough Thursday night just trying to keep pace in the AL West. Then they lost two of their biggest names from the lineup.
Yordan Alvarez and Jose Altuve both exited the game against the Los Angeles Angels, a move that immediately had Houston fans on alert. But the latest word points more toward caution than catastrophe, with the team apparently managing situations that didn’t look like fresh major injuries.
Altuve had already been dealing with a left foot contusion after being hit by a pitch in a game against the Giants. He stayed in that one at first, then eventually came out when the discomfort got worse.
Alvarez’s departure was just as noticeable, if not more so given how central he’s been to Houston’s offense. He entered Thursday hitting .317, according to the available game information.
The Astros didn’t have much margin for error even before the injuries started piling up. They were already thin on the bench, and the lineup felt even more stretched once both stars were out.
Yordan Alvarez and Jose Altuve are out of the game. If the Astros had any other available bench players, Isaac Paredes probably would be, too.

That’s the part Houston will be watching closely now. The Astros are barely holding on in the AL West, so every game matters more as the regular season winds down.
They’ve already had to absorb plenty of injury issues this year, which is why even a precautionary exit for either veteran gets attention fast. For the moment, though, there’s no immediate indication that Alvarez or Altuve is dealing with a major new setback.
So while Thursday’s exits were enough to rattle the mood, the bigger question is simple: do either of them miss any more time this weekend?

Astros Make Sudden Roster Sacrifice After Jeremy Pea Injury Scare
Jeremy Peas hand injury gave the Astros a brief scare, but the MRI brought at least one piece of relief by showing no structural damage. Even so, the club had to make a roster adjustment Wednesday, recalling infielder Raynel Delgado from Triple-A Sugar Land to give the infield a little more cover while Pea is being monitored.
The corresponding move was a tough one for Nelson Velzquez, who was only recently claimed off waivers but now has been designated for assignment. Hell be placed back on waivers, leaving Houston to sort out both its short-term depth chart and what the next step looks like if Peas hand doesnt respond the way the team hopes. [Read more 🡒]
Astros Division Lead Is Hiding A Problem Fans Can't Ignore
The Astros have spent most of August trying to make a division lead look sturdier than it feels. Even with first place in the American League West, the offense has gone quiet enough to leave a dent, with just 15 home runs through Aug. 18, and the starting rotation has not done the bullpen many favors. Houston's relief corps has helped stabilize games and keep the club afloat, but the overall margin for error is getting thin for a team that usually expects to win with more punch.
There is also the wrinkle of the Spencer Arrighetti-for-Daulton Varsho trade, which was supposed to help balance the roster but has not yet provided the kind of immediate boost the Astros needed. Varsho has struggled at the plate since the deal, adding to the sense that Houston's problems are piling up in the same places at once. The division lead is still there, but the longer the power outage and rotation issues linger, the harder it becomes to treat that cushion as anything more than temporary. [Read more 🡒]
Jeremy Pea Injury Scare Puts Astros Infield Depth Under Pressure
Jeremy Peas latest scare gave the Astros a brief jolt, but the early read brought some relief. He took a pitch off his left hand and came away with a contusion, yet an MRI showed no structural damage, leaving Houston optimistic that its starting shortstop can avoid an injured list stay and keep the club from having to shuffle its everyday infield plans for long.
Raynel Delgado was summoned from Triple-A Sugar Land to help provide some extra coverage in the meantime, a move that came with a corresponding roster change as Nelson Velasquez was designated for assignment. For an Astros team already trying to protect its infield depth, Peas health remains the central issue, and the next few days will determine whether this was only a scare or the start of a more complicated stretch.
