Astros Outfield Depth Just Took A Hit At A Bad Time

Joey Loperfido's recent surgery puts his readiness for the Astros' 2027 spring training in question, as the team tackles multiple challenges in the off-season.

Houston Astros outfielder Joey Loperfido’s recovery timeline now comes with a caveat that could matter heading into 2027 spring training.

Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle relayed the update from the team after Loperfido underwent hip surgery. The Astros said Loperfido had arthroscopic surgery on his right hip to “address a labral injury and hip impingement that were identified shortly after the season ended,” and Kawahara added, “He’ll be behind in spring training,”

How much that affects his spring status in 2027 still isn’t clear. A possible lockout could change the start of spring training altogether, which would alter the picture.

If spring training gets pushed back, Loperfido may not miss any time. If it opens on schedule, though, his availability could be affected.

Loperfido’s production at the plate this past season wasn’t eye-catching. He finished at .214/.311/.330. Even so, the 27-year-old still gives Houston useful outfield depth, and the Astros view that as meaningful value despite the modest offensive line.

Houston is coming off a postseason appearance in 2026, though it came in a division that was among the weakest in baseball. The Astros slipped into the playoffs with 81 wins, and the organization is looking for more consistency moving forward.

That push starts with the offseason. The Astros are seeking roster upgrades, but they first have to hire a general manager to help guide those moves. They’re also without Joe Espada, who will not be back as manager, leaving another major opening to fill.

Cubs Fans Have A Real Reason To Watch Seattles Manager Search

The Mariners managerial search has reached an important stage, and it matters in Houston because one of the names that briefly sat on the board is now out of the mix. Rocco Baldelli has removed himself from consideration because of family considerations, narrowing a process that is already moving along after Dan Wilson said he would not return as manager in 2027.

Baldelli, who managed the Twins before being let go after the 2025 season, has since taken a front office assistant role with the Dodgers. With his name off the list, Joe Espada and Jason Kanzler are the two known candidates left in Seattles search, which is reportedly in an advanced stage and could have ripple effects far beyond the Pacific Northwest. Mike Rizzo Is Suddenly Tied To A Nationals Nightmare

The Astros are moving quickly to fill their vacant general manager job, and Mike Rizzo has emerged as one of the more intriguing names in the process. The former Nationals chief baseball officer helped guide Washington to a World Series title in 2019 before being fired in 2025, and Houston has already spoken with him as it sorts through options for a front office reset.

Rizzo is not the only candidate in the mix, with Brewers assistant general manager Matt Klein also having interviewed for the opening. Houston wants the position settled before the upcoming general managers meetings, which puts some pressure on the search and makes each conversation matter a little more as the club looks for the right fit. Astros Suddenly Have A Joey Loperfido Question Entering Spring

Joey Loperfidos path back into the Astros mix has hit an early snag. The outfielder, reacquired from the Blue Jays earlier this year, had been part of Houstons roster for the American League Wild Card Series and brings the kind of organizational flexibility teams value, with experience at both the minor league and major league levels.

Instead, his offseason now comes with a delay the Astros would rather not be managing this close to camp. Loperfido recently underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right hip to address a labral injury and hip impingement, and he is not expected to be ready for the start of Spring Training, leaving his status as another early spring storyline for Houston to monitor.
