Astros Make Pitching Move Amid Mounting Injuries

Astros bolster pitching depth by calling up Cody Bolton, reshaping their roster amidst injuries and recent struggles.

The Houston Astros have made a notable roster move, bringing pitcher Cody Bolton up to the major leagues. This decision comes as reliever Christian Roa is sent down to Triple-A Sugar Land, creating space on the active roster. Additionally, Hayden Wesneski, sidelined by Tommy John surgery, has been shifted to the 60-day injured list, making room on the 40-man roster.

Bolton is making his return to the majors for the first time since last April. The 27-year-old right-hander previously had a brief stint with Cleveland, where he pitched two innings, allowing three runs.

After that outing, he was sent to Triple-A, but his season took a turn when he was involved in a car accident. This led to his release by the Guardians in June.

Bolton found a new home with the Astros, signing a minor league deal in late July.

At 6’2”, Bolton was still recovering from his injuries when he joined Houston. He made his organizational debut in late August, pitching 13 2/3 innings for Sugar Land and giving up just three runs.

During that stretch, he struck out 15 batters but also issued eight walks. Despite a rocky spring outing where he walked four of the six batters he faced, the Astros see potential in Bolton as a long reliever.

Christian Roa, who has been utilized as a single-inning reliever this spring and in his initial appearances with Houston, is making way for Bolton. The Astros are looking to bolster their bullpen depth, especially following Tatsuya Imai's struggles in his big league debut, where he couldn't make it past the third inning. Bolton's addition provides a fresh arm to support Lance McCullers Jr. and the rest of the pitching staff.
