The Houston Astros are getting a much-needed arm back, and the timing could hardly be better. Hayden Wesneski has been reinstated from the injured list and is set to make his first start of the season after spending most of 2025 recovering from Tommy John surgery.
That’s a welcome development for a rotation that has been patched together all year. Houston already took a hit when Framber Valdez left for the Detroit Tigers, then lost ace Hunter Brown for an extended stretch because of injury. On top of that, both Lance McCuellers Jr. and Tatsuya Imai have been inconsistent enough that McCuellers is no longer with the organization.
The Astros have said they plan to be buyers at the trade deadline, but any outside help becomes a lot less urgent if Wesneski can give them something stable on the mound. Houston is hoping his return can keep the rotation from needing multiple reinforcements down the line.
To activate Wesneski, the Astros optioned right-hander Miguel Ullola back to Sugar Land. It’s been a constant shuffle for Houston’s pitching staff this season, and that kind of instability is exactly what they’ll need to clean up if they want to be in playoff position when October arrives.
Wesneski’s rehab work at least gave Houston a reason for optimism. In three games on assignment, he put up a 2.77 ERA, which is a lot more encouraging than what the Astros have been getting from too many of their Triple-A starts this year. The offense has carried its share of the load; now the pitching staff has to answer.
Houston enters the third game of the series already with the win in hand, thanks to big swings from Yordan Alvarez. The Astros are a game under .500 and looking for a sweep before heading into a home series against the AL West leaders and in-state rivals ahead of the deadline.
As of Wednesday, Houston sits a game out of the final wild card spot and two games behind the Texas Rangers. That picture could shift quickly by the end of the weekend.
With August 3 approaching fast, every result matters for a front office trying to decide how aggressive to get. For now, the Astros can only keep stacking innings, pitches, and at-bats. If they do that, October baseball will be there for the taking.
