Astros GM Search Just Got More Complicated Than Fans Expected

The Astros are at a crossroads as they consider Mike Rizzo and Matt Kleine for their next GM, with each candidate offering a distinct vision for the team's future.

The Astros’ search for a new general manager may have taken a sharp turn.

For a moment, Milwaukee Brewers assistant Matt Kleine looked like a natural fit to replace Dana Brown, especially with the Brewers on the doorstep of a World Series title. But USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reported Monday that Houston also interviewed former Washington Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo, and that changes the picture.

Nightengale said Rizzo has told close friends he has a “deep desire” to take over as the Astros’ general manager. He also reported that the 65-year-old holds a deep respect for Jim Crane.

That puts Houston in a tricky spot. On one side is the appeal of following a path tied to the Brewers’ success, with the added temptation of looking at executives from a team that is about to win it all. On the other is the reality that Milwaukee’s rise has not been the work of one person alone, a point that becomes clearer when looking at what has happened with the New York Mets under former Brewers general manager David Stearns.

Rizzo brings a different kind of comfort. He built the Nationals roster that beat the Astros in the 2019 World Series, but his run in Washington also tailed off by the end.

A move for Rizzo would look like Houston trying to wring out whatever contention remains from its current core. The Astros did make the playoffs this year, though that owed more to the division they were in than anything else.

If Houston wants its next general manager to help shape a new competitive era, Kleine may be the stronger choice. The Brewers’ success has come from more than one source, but Kleine likely has real perspective on player development, which the Astros have lacked for too long.

If Kleine is the target, he would likely wait until after the World Series to accept an offer from Houston, if one comes. For now, the Astros appear to be doing their due diligence and gathering more outside views on what needs to change. Whatever the motive for the Rizzo interview, the front office calendar is now moving fast, and the offseason is almost here.

Red Sox Add Another New Voice As Coaching Overhaul Continues

The Red Sox are continuing to reshape their staff in the wake of the dismissals around manager Alex Cora, and the latest addition comes from Houston. Jason Bell, who has spent the past several years in the Astros organization and worked in a variety of coaching roles there, is headed to Boston to serve as the clubs outfield instructor.

For the Astros, Bell had been a familiar presence since joining the organization in 2017, including three seasons on the major league staff as a field coordinator and outfield coach. His departure adds another layer to the coaching turnover story in Houston, where the staff has already been in flux and the full ripple effects of the changes are still being sorted out. Astros Front Office Shakeup Could Bring Back A Familiar Name

The Astros are in the middle of a front-office reshuffle, and one name that has come back into the conversation is Oz Ocampo. The former Marlins executive is being considered for an assistant general manager position as Houston evaluates candidates for a role that would add another layer to the teams baseball operations structure. Ocampo has a long rsum in international scouting and has worked with the Astros before, along with stops with the Marlins, Pirates and Rockies.

Houston has spoken with multiple candidates as it looks to round out the job, and a decision is expected soon. For an organization that has long leaned on sharp evaluation and player development behind the scenes, the fit of that hire matters, especially with a familiar voice and a familiar track record potentially back in the mix. The question now is whether the Astros will bring him back into a key seat in the front office. [Read more 🡒]

Astros Face A Tough Offseason Call On Familiar Roster Pieces

The Astros are already staring at another important roster crossroads, with leadership and contract questions beginning to gather around the post-2026 picture. Six players are currently headed toward free agency, and the mix is a familiar one for a club that has spent years trying to balance continuity with the need to keep refreshing the roster.

Varsho, Abreu, Okert, Vasquez, De Los Santos and Wade are all part of that conversation in different ways, and the teams willingness to keep them will depend on performance, fit and how the rest of the roster evolves over the next couple of seasons. There is also a young Japanese right-hander under a three-year, $54 million deal who technically could opt out, although that scenario is not viewed as likely, leaving the Astros with more stability there than at a few of the other spots they will have to sort through.
