Astros Get Blunt Playoff Reality Check From Verducci

Despite setbacks, the Astros' playoff hopes hinge on their pitching depth and Yordan Alvarez's health.

The Houston Astros have been a powerhouse in the MLB over the past decade, clinching two World Series titles and consistently making deep playoff runs. However, last year marked a bump in the road as they missed the playoffs, with only a few of their championship-winning players still on the roster. This offseason, they faced another setback when Framber Valdez departed for the Detroit Tigers in free agency.

Despite these challenges, MLB analyst Tom Verducci remains optimistic about the Astros’ playoff prospects. He believes that even without Valdez, the Astros’ pitching staff is robust enough to secure a postseason spot.

While he places them behind the Seattle Mariners in the American League West, Verducci predicts a wild card berth is well within reach. “They do things right in Houston,” he noted on MLB Network.

“Their pitching program is top-notch. Losing Framber is tough, but they’ve got depth.

They might not match Seattle, but I still see them as playoff contenders.”

Last season, the Astros ended an impressive streak of eight consecutive postseason appearances, finishing just three games shy of the Mariners with an 87-75 record. Verducci highlights Yordan Alvarez as a pivotal figure in the Astros’ lineup, crucial to their playoff hopes.

Alvarez’s health is seen as a determining factor in their success. “If Yordan Alvarez is healthy, then the playoff window isn’t closed,” Verducci explained.

“They really missed him last year. He’s an MVP-caliber player.”

Alvarez’s absence was felt profoundly last season, as injuries kept him off the field for most of the year. He dealt with right-hand inflammation, a fractured metacarpal, and an ankle sprain, limiting him to just 48 games and under 200 plate appearances. His return to form could be the key to reigniting the Astros’ postseason ambitions.
