Astros Finally Found A Trade Partner For Lance McCullers Jr

Despite his injury struggles, Lance McCullers Jr. finds a new home with the Milwaukee Brewers in a rare trade between playoff hopefuls, potentially shifting the balance in both teams' postseason pursuits.

The Houston Astros are moving on from Lance McCullers Jr., and the destination is a surprise only because of how unlikely this kind of deal looked a short time ago. McCullers, once the kind of arm teams would have lined up for, has been battered by injuries and hasn’t looked like the pitcher who used to draw that level of attention. Even so, Houston has found a buyer.

Brian McTaggart reported on July 15, 2026, that the Astros are finalizing a trade with the Milwaukee Brewers.

The fit makes a certain amount of sense on paper. Houston has been trying to find a path away from McCullers, while Milwaukee just lost Brandon Woodruff to another injury. At this stage of the season, when both clubs are still in the playoff hunt, trades like this don’t happen often - but when the needs line up, they can get done fast.

McCullers’ contract made the whole thing tougher. He’s owed $17.7 million this year, which is a heavy price tag for a rental, especially for a pitcher whose recent track record has been defined by missed time.

He also had a full no-trade clause, so this move had to have his approval. Being sent to one of the better teams in baseball this season probably helped smooth that over.

The expectation is that Houston will get some salary relief in the deal, and that could give Dana Brown more room to push even harder at the trade deadline than he already planned to.

There’s also a very real downside for the Astros if this turns into a Brewers success story. Milwaukee has a reputation for getting more out of pitchers than most clubs, and if McCullers finds something there and contributes in a meaningful way, the second-guessing in Houston is going to get loud in a hurry. Calls for Brown to answer for the move - and for a broader reckoning with the Astros - would only grow if that happens.

Astros Just Landed A Familiar Baseball Name In A Surprising Deal

The Astros added a young left-handed bat with a familiar baseball name in a deal that also reshaped the other side of the transaction. Jadyn Fielder, a 21-year-old who signed with Milwaukee in 2024 and has only reached rookie ball so far, is now in Houstons system after being included in the trade that sent Lance McCullers Jr. to the Brewers.

For Houston, it is the kind of move that fits both the present and the future: a major-league arm going out, and a developmental hitter coming back with a chance to grow in a new organization. The Brewers also brought in left-hander Colton Gordon, but the most intriguing part for Astros fans is the arrival of Fielder and what his next step might look like once he gets settled into the system. Mariners Threat Could Make Astros' Playoff Climb Even Steeper

Houstons playoff push has already required plenty of patience, with the club still chasing both the AL West-leading Rangers and the final wild card spot after a rough start. The Astros have steadied themselves, but the same issues that have lingered all year, especially in the bullpen and the rotation, still leave little margin for error as the deadline approaches.

Seattle could make that climb even steeper. Reports suggest the Mariners are prepared to act like serious buyers and use some of their pitching depth to chase impact help, a move that would strengthen a division rival Houston may have to outlast down the stretch. With Dana Brown working with limited trade ammunition of his own, the Astros may be stuck trying to patch holes while the team ahead of them looks ready to get better in a hurry. [Read more 🡒]
