Za’Darius Smith is heading back to the NFL, and his next stop is Atlanta.
The former Packers edge rusher is signing with the Falcons, the team announced Tuesday, Aug. 18, ending a retirement that lasted less than a year. Ian Rapoport of ESPN and the NFL Network reported the deal is for one year and $6 million.
Smith retired in the middle of last season after appearing in five games with the Philadelphia Eagles. At the time, he said, "I knew this day would come - but now that it's here, I'm feeling so many emotions I never expected. Who would've thought that a kid from Greenville, AL, with just one year of high school football experience, would go on to play professional football in the NFL for 11 incredible years!"
The 33-year-old’s best run came in Green Bay. After arriving from the Baltimore Ravens, where he spent four seasons, Smith delivered back-to-back big seasons for the Packers.
In 2019, he posted a career-high 13.5 sacks and earned his first Pro Bowl nod. The next year, he followed with 12.5 sacks and a second-team All-Pro selection.
He played all 16 games in both seasons.
In 2021, a back injury cut his season short after just one game. He was released after that year and made his frustration with the Packers clear, saying the team made him feel like "a nobody" while he was injured.
Smith moved on to Minnesota, saying in part he wanted a chance to face Green Bay twice a year. He stayed healthy with the Vikings, played in all 16 games, and picked up his third Pro Bowl after finishing the 2022 season with 10.0 sacks.
From there, Smith spent a year and a half with the Cleveland Browns before being traded to the Detroit Lions at the 2024 deadline. He later signed a one-year deal with the Eagles before the 2025 season, then announced on Oct. 13 that he was finished with football.
Now he’s back, and he’s reuniting with Falcons head coach Kevin Stefanski, who coached him in Cleveland before being fired by the Browns after the 2025 season.
Smith did not get the chance to face the Packers last year in Philadelphia, since he had already retired before the Eagles came to Lambeau Field for a Monday night game in November. If he stays on the field this time, he’ll have another shot when the Falcons visit Lambeau for Green Bay’s home opener on "Thursday Night Football" Sept. 24.
