Za'Darius Smith's Return Just Added Intrigue For Packers Fans

Former Packers standout Za'Darius Smith emerges from retirement, poised to make an impact with the Falcons under a familiar coach.

Za’Darius Smith is heading back to the NFL, and his next stop is Atlanta.

The former Packers edge rusher is signing with the Falcons, the team announced Tuesday, Aug. 18, ending a retirement that lasted less than a year. Ian Rapoport of ESPN and the NFL Network reported the deal is for one year and $6 million.

Smith retired in the middle of last season after appearing in five games with the Philadelphia Eagles. At the time, he said, "I knew this day would come - but now that it's here, I'm feeling so many emotions I never expected. Who would've thought that a kid from Greenville, AL, with just one year of high school football experience, would go on to play professional football in the NFL for 11 incredible years!"

The 33-year-old’s best run came in Green Bay. After arriving from the Baltimore Ravens, where he spent four seasons, Smith delivered back-to-back big seasons for the Packers.

In 2019, he posted a career-high 13.5 sacks and earned his first Pro Bowl nod. The next year, he followed with 12.5 sacks and a second-team All-Pro selection.

He played all 16 games in both seasons.

In 2021, a back injury cut his season short after just one game. He was released after that year and made his frustration with the Packers clear, saying the team made him feel like "a nobody" while he was injured.

Smith moved on to Minnesota, saying in part he wanted a chance to face Green Bay twice a year. He stayed healthy with the Vikings, played in all 16 games, and picked up his third Pro Bowl after finishing the 2022 season with 10.0 sacks.

From there, Smith spent a year and a half with the Cleveland Browns before being traded to the Detroit Lions at the 2024 deadline. He later signed a one-year deal with the Eagles before the 2025 season, then announced on Oct. 13 that he was finished with football.

Now he’s back, and he’s reuniting with Falcons head coach Kevin Stefanski, who coached him in Cleveland before being fired by the Browns after the 2025 season.

Smith did not get the chance to face the Packers last year in Philadelphia, since he had already retired before the Eagles came to Lambeau Field for a Monday night game in November. If he stays on the field this time, he’ll have another shot when the Falcons visit Lambeau for Green Bay’s home opener on "Thursday Night Football" Sept. 24.

Packers Future Looks Stronger Than Plenty Of Fans Realize

The Packers are entering the 2026 season with something plenty of teams spend years trying to build: a genuinely promising young core. ESPN analysts placed Green Bay seventh in their ranking of the leagues brightest futures, a nod to a roster that still has room to grow but already looks deeper and more talented than many around the NFL give it credit for. Jordan Love remains the centerpiece of it all, and his emergence as a Tier 2 quarterback gives the franchise a foundation most teams would love to have at this stage.

What makes Green Bay so intriguing is how much of that upside is tied to the players around Love. The Packers young pass catchers and offensive linemen are expected to be major parts of a passing game that can become a real problem for opponents if the group keeps trending the right way. The question now is less about whether the talent is there and more about how consistently the supporting cast develops, because the difference between a promising roster and a true contender often comes down to that next step. Packers Backup Tyrod Taylor Shares Big Offseason Moment

Tyrod Taylors first offseason in Green Bay included a personal milestone away from the practice field, as the Packers backup quarterback married Bianka Charity-Parker in Indiana. The ceremony took place at a wildflower farm, and the couple later shared photos from the day on Instagram, giving a glimpse of a celebration that looked every bit as polished as it was personal.

For Taylor, who joined the Packers earlier this offseason, the timing adds another layer to a busy stretch as he settles into a new team and a new chapter in his life. The wedding was planned by Victoria Ann Events, and while the football side of his move will draw the most attention in Green Bay, this was the kind of offseason moment that quietly reminds you there is plenty happening for players before camp even opens. Bills Fans Just Earned Bragging Rights Across The Entire NFL

Nielsens new NFL Local Fandom Index put a fresh layer of numbers behind something football fans have argued about for years, and the results gave Buffalo a clear edge. The index weighed everything from apparel purchases and event attendance to television viewership, streaming, radio listening, betting intent, social media following and general interest, creating a broad snapshot of how deeply each fan base shows up for its team.

For Green Bay, the takeaway is familiar but still notable. The Packers landed third behind the Bills and Chiefs, a reminder that their support remains among the leagues most recognizable and durable even as the ranking also reflects the different ways teams build their followings. The list is as much about tradition as it is about momentum, and Green Bays place near the top speaks to how consistently its fan base stays in the conversation. [Read more 🡒]
