Xavier McKinneys Stand After The Lions Loss Came At A Price

Packers' Xavier McKinney reacts to a hefty NFL fine with an impressive on-field display following his criticism of officials.

Xavier McKinney didn’t back down from his criticism of the officials after Green Bay’s loss to Detroit, and the NFL backed him into a fine for it.

Before Thursday night’s game against Carolina, McKinney said he had been fined for the comments he made after the Packers’ 20-17 defeat to the Lions in Week 7. The issue centered on several calls he believed went against Green Bay, including a key late penalty in the fourth quarter.

ESPN’s Rob Demovsky reported that the fine came in at no less than the league’s minimum for criticizing officials. “The minimum fine for criticizing officials is $25,000.

He wouldn’t say exactly how much but said it wasn’t less than that. But he also said it was worth it to support his team,” wrote the NFL insider.

McKinney’s own reaction was blunt. “I make enough money, so I’ll be OK,” he commented.

The timing didn’t slow him down on the field. Green Bay answered its Detroit setback with a 27-19 win over Carolina at Lambeau Field, improving to 5-3 while the Panthers dropped to 3-4. McKinney was a big part of that response, finishing Thursday night with three total sacks and one pass defended.

The veteran safety arrived in Green Bay in 2024 on a four-year, $67 million deal, and he again showed why the Packers wanted him. He took the fine, stood by what he said, and then delivered a strong night when it mattered.

Green Bay’s next game comes in Week 9 against the New England Patriots.

Josh Jacobs Had To Address A Packers Celebration Controversy

Josh Jacobs one-yard touchdown run was supposed to be just another hard-earned scoring play, but the celebration afterward quickly became the bigger conversation. When he put his hands behind his back, the gesture drew attention because of his past legal issues tied to a domestic dispute, and it was enough to prompt questions about whether there was any message behind it.

Jacobs pushed back on that reading, saying there was no disrespect intended and framing the moment as part of a planned celebration. The episode came shortly after his return to action from the commissioners exempt list, a stretch that put his off-field situation back under a bright spotlight even as he has tried to focus on football, show remorse and move forward with the Packers. Packers Win Couldnt Hide A Roster Problem Green Bay Must Fix

The Packers got the result they needed, but the win did little to disguise a rushing attack that has been stuck near the bottom of the league through seven games. Green Bays ground game has struggled to find any rhythm, and the problems have only been made worse by injuries up front, where the offensive line has been shuffling through personnel issues and losing stability at center.

Sean Rhyans absence looms over the discussion even more now, because the Packers are trying to keep the offense balanced without one of the key pieces that helps hold the line together. If Green Bay decides the answer has to come from outside the building, the kind of moves being floated would point to a team that knows it needs help in a hurry, even if any real solution would take some doing. Packers Win Still Left One Familiar Concern Front And Center

The Packers got the result they needed on Thursday night, beating the Panthers to move to 5-3, but the win did not exactly quiet every concern hanging over this offense. Green Bays ground game again had trouble getting traction, finishing with just 48 yards on 25 carries, a familiar issue for a team that still wants more balance than it has consistently shown.

Christian Watson gave the passing game a needed spark, leading the team with nine catches for 113 yards before a mid-game chest injury briefly changed the tone of the night. On the other side of the ball, Green Bays pass rush helped cover for some of the offensive unevenness by getting after Bryce Young and forcing Carolina into long stretches of discomfort, a reminder that this team can still win in different ways even while one nagging question keeps surfacing.
