The Wisconsin football community is mourning the loss of former player Jack Pugh, who has passed away at the age of 24. The announcement was made on X by the program, though details surrounding his death remain undisclosed.
In a heartfelt statement, Wisconsin football expressed their sorrow: "The Wisconsin Athletics family is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Jack Pugh. Jack was a positive light and brought a genuine spirit to our football program.
More than that, he cared about people and was loved by his teammates and staff. Jack proudly earned his degree from UW-Madison in 2025 and will forever be remembered and loved."
Pugh, who was a highly-touted four-star recruit in the 2021 class, began his journey with Wisconsin football by redshirting his first year. He made a brief appearance in a game during the 2022 season. However, in December 2023, Pugh chose to leave the program to focus on his mental health, as reported by the Associated Press.
In a candid Instagram post at the time, Pugh shared, "My physical health was not near perfect, but my mental health was the reason I decided to hang it up. Over years of prolonged depression and substance abuse, I decided I deserved a better life and to finally find happiness. In no way was football the root of these problems, but everything in my life had distracted me for so long to the point I never had prioritized my mental health all along, digging a deeper darker hole."
Fans have been offering their condolences and support to Pugh’s family, with messages of sympathy flooding social media. One post read, "Heart and prayers go out to his family. RIP young man."
Jack Pugh's legacy at Wisconsin is one of talent and heart, and his impact on those around him will not be forgotten.
