Former Wisconsin Badgers standout Sam Dekker recently weighed in on the viral moment involving UConn Huskies head coach Dan Hurley after their thrilling 73-72 victory over the Duke Blue Devils in the Elite Eight of the 2026 NCAA Tournament.
In a game that kept fans on the edge of their seats, Huskies freshman guard Braylon Mullins nailed a game-winning three-pointer, sealing the win. But it was Hurley's animated celebration, which appeared to involve a headbutt with an official, that caught everyone's attention.
Dekker, a legend in his own right, didn't hold back in his assessment of Hurley's actions. He expressed his belief that Hurley’s gesture warranted a technical foul, which could have dramatically altered the game’s outcome.
Dekker shared his thoughts on social media, stating, “I have no bias here. This is a tech 10/10 times.
For multiple reasons… it would have lost the game for his team and he would have tried to fight the officials like he did nothing wrong. I just don’t understand it at all.
Also, referees need to grow a spine in instances like this.”
Interestingly, the official in question, Roger Ayers, seemed unfazed by the incident. Speaking to Seth Greenberg, Ayers mentioned he was unaware of any controversial interaction, saying, “What are you talking about?
Nothing happened. The ball went in.
I was running back. They were celebrating.
(Dan Hurley) leaned in, said something to me. I said something to him.
It was absolutely nothing.”
Whether Dekker’s opinion will shift remains to be seen. However, Hurley’s actions undeniably added another layer of excitement to an already unpredictable March Madness.
