The Green Bay Packers have some decisions to make this offseason, and one of the more intriguing ones centers around wide receiver Romeo Doubs. At first glance, it seemed like a foregone conclusion that Doubs would be heading elsewhere in free agency. The Packers are tight against the salary cap and have a wide receiver room that’s already brimming with young talent-Christian Watson, Jayden Reed, Dontayvion Wicks, Matthew Golden, and Savion Williams are all under contract heading into next season.
But hold up-this situation might not be quite as cut and dry as it first appeared.
According to a recent report, the Packers and Doubs aren’t necessarily closing the book on each other just yet. There’s reportedly mutual interest in at least having a conversation about a possible return. That’s a notable development, especially given how quickly the narrative had shifted toward a clean break.
Let’s be clear: Doubs was a significant contributor in 2025. He led the team in receiving yards with 724 and tied for the team lead in receiving touchdowns with six. Those aren’t eye-popping numbers, but they’re solid-and more importantly, they speak to the trust he earned from quarterback Jordan Love in key moments.
Doubs brings a steady, reliable presence to the offense. He’s not the flashiest name on the roster, but he’s been productive, especially in the red zone and on third downs. That kind of consistency is valuable, particularly for a young team still figuring out its offensive identity.
However, the financial picture can’t be ignored. Green Bay enters the offseason $1.4 million over the cap.
That’s not a massive number in the grand scheme of things, but it does mean every move has to be calculated. Re-signing Doubs would eat into limited resources, and with so many young receivers already in the mix, the front office has to ask whether bringing him back is the best use of those dollars.
From a roster-building standpoint, it might make more sense to let Doubs test the market and continue developing the younger core. Jayden Reed and Dontayvion Wicks both flashed high ceilings last year, and the front office clearly believes in the upside of guys like Golden and Williams. Add in Christian Watson-when healthy-and it’s a crowded group with a lot of potential.
Still, Doubs’ production and rapport with Love give him a case to stick around. If the price is right and the dialogue between both sides is productive, there’s a path to keeping him in green and gold.
So while the expectation might still lean toward Doubs moving on, it’s not a done deal. There’s enough mutual respect and interest to keep the door cracked open.
Whether that leads to a reunion or a fresh start elsewhere, we’ll know more as the offseason unfolds. But for now, Doubs’ future in Green Bay remains very much in play.
