The NFL handed Matthew Golden a fine after the Green Bay Packers’ win over the Carolina Panthers, even though the wideout never drew a flag on the play itself.
On Saturday, the league announced that Golden was fined $12,537 for unnecessary roughness in the second quarter. The violation was listed as “striking/kicking/kneeing.”
The moment came while Golden was engaged with Panthers defensive back Marco Wilson. Wilson was the player flagged for unnecessary roughness on the field, but he was not fined.
Golden still finished the game with a strong line, hauling in seven catches for 79 yards and a touchdown in Green Bay’s 27-19 victory. The Packers have now won four of their last five after opening the season 1-2.
Golden is in his second season with Green Bay after the team took him in the first round, No. 23 overall, in the 2025 NFL Draft. As a rookie, he posted 29 receptions for 361 yards across 14 games, including five starts.
This season has looked very different. Through eight games, Golden has 43 catches for 619 yards and four touchdowns. He’s also developed a strong connection with Christian Watson, who has 42 receptions for 708 yards and six scores.
“Just proud. Happy for him,” said Watson of Golden’s start, per Wes Hodkiewicz of Packers.com.
“The first day I saw him run a route, I was like, 'All right, we’re gonna have something here.' It’s been exciting to see him continue to blossom that I think he knows he could be, that I knew he could be.”

Jordan Love May Have Pushed NFL Officiating Frustration Too Far
Jordan Loves Halloween look landed with a little extra edge for Packers fans still irritated by the whistle work around the league. Love and his wife, Ronika Stone, dressed in referee costumes, a playful jab at NFL officials that came soon after a Packers game featuring disputed calls.
The timing is what makes it interesting, because the league has not been shy about punishing public shots at officiating. Green Bay safety Xavier McKinney was fined after venting about it earlier this season, so Loves costume has naturally sparked questions about whether the quarterback may have pushed the joke a step too far. Packers Face A Week That Could Reshape Their NFC Playoff Push
At 5-3, the Packers have put themselves in the middle of the NFC race, but not comfortably enough to ignore what happens around them. The Athletics projections have Green Bay sitting at a 50 percent shot to reach the postseason, which is about as clear a sign as any that this is the kind of week that can change the conversation in a hurry.
A meeting with the Patriots is the obvious focal point, but the playoff picture is being shaped by more than just one result. In a conference that has stayed crowded and competitive, Green Bays margin for error is thin, and the other games on the schedule could matter almost as much as the one in front of them. For the Packers, this is the stretch where a good position can get a lot better, or a little more precarious. [Read more 🡒]
Packers Head To Foxborough With One Big Test Still Hanging Over Them
The Packers head to Foxborough for a Week 9 matchup with a little momentum after getting back to 5-3, but there is still plenty to sort out before they leave New England with another win. The passing game remains a central storyline, with Christian Watson and Matthew Golden among the players who could tilt the night in Green Bays favor if the offense finds a rhythm early.
Protection up front and special teams are also part of the equation, and this trip offers a useful measuring stick for a team trying to show it can travel well. Foxborough has a way of exposing soft spots, and for the Packers, the question is less about whether they have enough talent to compete than whether the details hold up when the game gets tight.
